Partnerships January 2023
Happy new year!

This year, the Sierra Health Foundation and The Center are focused on ensuring that community-based nonprofits and underserved communities have the assistance they need to participate in and benefit from recovery focused initiatives. We are honored to take up this charge.

One month into 2023 and it’s clear that public investments are shifting from responding to the COVID-19 pandemic to recovering from it. The shift will happen simultaneously at the local, state and national levels. The impending funding reductions across a broad array of public services will significantly impact the health and well-being of communities across California.
LATEST NEWS
Mourning Tyre Nichols
Chet P. Hewitt, president and CEO of Sierra Health Foundation and CEO of The Center, issued this statement after viewing the Memphis Police Department’s body camera footage that showed the deadly actions that took the life of Sacramento native Tyre Nichols:

“Tyre Nichols was a son of Sacramento. I’m sad and angry at the callous indifference I saw in the video of his murder. Still, I know that my grief pales in comparison to what his mother and family feel..."
Foundation with Hope and Heal Fund Op-Ed

"There is no future in funding paradigms that favor law enforcement responses to public health problems. There is one in sufficiently funding communities – and it’s a safe and equitable future. Californians deserve that."

There have been three mass shootings in three days in California.

We grieve with the Asian American and Pacific Islander community of Monterey Park and the families whose loved ones were murdered or injured celebrating the Lunar New Year. Our hearts are with the farmworkers in Half Moon Bay who lost neighbors. Our condolences are with the many injured in Oakland and the family of the young man who died.

Thoughts are not enough, we know.
THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.
Community partners honor life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
The Black Child Legacy Campaign (BCLC) honored Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. through sponsorship, participation and leadership of gatherings throughout Sacramento neighborhoods in early January.

In North Sacramento, BCLC partners including the Roberts Family Development Center led a neighborhood march and resource fair.

In South Sacramento, the Rose Family Creative Empowerment Center led a caravan and community fair.

Hundreds of neighborhood residents attended these events to celebrate the life and legacy of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with their beloved communities.
