COMP-Northwest news

COMP-Northwest Professor Glen Kisby, PhD, and his OHSU colleague Dr. Jacob Raber were interviewed on "London Live with Mike Stubbs" on radio station 980 CFPL about the dangers of second-hand cigarette smoke.

980 CFPL is a Global News radio station in London, Ontario, Canada. The article Secondhand Smoke World Map - HouseFresh estimates the number of cigarettes a person indirectly smokes while living in various cities due to poor air quality. London is sixth on Canada's list, with 110 cigarettes per year. The producer of the show contacted Drs. Kisby and Raber because she saw their research on second-hand smoke last year. You can find a recording of the interview on the show page: Megaphone.

CVM and CDM news

A team led by College of Veterinary Medicine Professor Dr. Yiling Hong (left) and College of Dental Medicine Professor Dr. Q. Quinn Li (below, right) recently published a paper in iScience titled “Microglia-containing cerebral organoids derived from induced pluripotent stem cells for the study of neurological diseases." The authors include two former and current MSBS program students Lawrence Chang and Jimmy Lin, research associates Chen Xie, Mariann Chang, Jose S. Aguilar and visiting scholars Xu Dong and Juncheng Lin.

The paper reports a new approach for generating microglia-containing cerebral organoids (or mini-brain) derived from human pluripotent stem cells.

Using this platform, cerebral organoids of Western Pacific Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and Parkinsonism–Dementia Complex (ALS-PDC) were generated from patient-derived induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). The results indicated that ALS-PDC-affected organoids had more reactive microglia, leading to impaired microglia-mediated phagocytosis. It also demonstrated the feasibility of using microglia-containing organoids for the study of neurodegenerative diseases.
