Federal Directive on Non-Physician Care

Late last week, the federal government issued a statement introducing a new interpretation of the Canadian Health Act, which would require provinces to cover services deemed medically necessary if provided by non-physician professionals such as nurse practitioners or pharmacists. This directive captured our immediate attention, as Manitoba and many provinces lack any meaningful frameworks about integrated, team-based care.

The interview period for the first iteration of the 2025 R-1 Main Residency Match begins on January 18, and in the lead-up, medical learners have been getting ready with research, references, application deadlines and interview prep. After the national interview and ranking periods, Match Day arrives on March 4, 2025.

Doctors Manitoba Joins Call to Drop Capital Gains Plans

71 words / .5 min read / For all members

Last week we reported on the lack of clarity to capital gains hikes being reversed following the prorogation of parliament following Prime Minister Trudeau’s resignation. We have been concerned since the start of this policy change last year that the capital gains hike unfairly affects physicians and your retirement planning.

The CMA is hosting a virtual town hall for physicians on capital gains on January 27. Get more information on event and register now.

This week, we joined with the Canadian Medical Association and other provincial groups to call on the federal government to drop the plans. See our letter here.
