LOISAIDA    MISSION    SENIORS    SUPPORT   CONTACT
September 14th, 2018

You are invited! Please join us for the co-opening of two fall exhibitions tonight, and for an afternoon of activities for all ages at La Plaza Cultural tomorrow afternoon.

Exhibition Opening and Reception: Friday, September 14th, 2018 - 6:00 to 9:00 pm

In the exhibition, Documents of Resistance: Our Time , Mexican-American artist, Antonio Serna is hoping to take us down a visual path to consider these and many other questions in regards to the important but often overlooked contributions of artists of color.

Resident artist Antonio Serna is creating timelines to highlight the art and activism of artists of color. Do you remember a spot in your neighborhood that was an important place for artists of color meet and make art. Do you recall a rally or protest organized by artists of color? How about an exhibition by and for artists of color? Or community art projects that were made by and for communities of color?

Help us build these important timelines by sending in your memories of resistance: people, places, or events relevant to the history of art and activism by people of color. Bring them in person, or submit your memories here.

Read more about his residency and exhibition here, and stay tuned for related programming, to be announced.

Documents of Resistance: Our Time is made possible in part with public funds from Creative Engagement, supported by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council and administered by Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, and the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs' Cultural Development Fund.

Exhibition Opening and Reception: Friday, September 14th, 2018 - 6:00 to 9:00 pm

This commemorative and interactive installation by artists Adrian "Viajero" Roman provides an intimate view of life post-Maria, and the unfortunate living of a "new normal" for Puerto Rican people. This installation, reflects intimate moments experienced during the artists' travels throughout the island bringing relief aid, supporting and helping with recovery, and rebuilding efforts. A special collection of found objects gathered from giant piles of rubbish, scattered around barrios, beaches and on the properties of were a home once stood. The combination of these found objects woven together, create portraits of individual lives profoundly touched by trauma and tragedy, travail and resilience.

The artist invites audiences to interact with the installation by lighting a candle for a lost life in Puerto Rico, chalk the wall with a name or message, as well as write on index cards to be put inside a box of recuerdos .

It will be on view at the Loisaida Center throughout the fall, with corresponding exhibitions at El Museo del Barrio, and his Brooklyn studio at 75 19th Street.
