Introducing Illustrator
Nazli Tarcan!

Please join us in welcoming our newest illustrator to the Full Circle Literary family and to the children’s books community!
Nazli Tarcan is a Turkish artist and illustrator currently based in Namur, Belgium. In developing her craft, she has worked with different traditional mediums, including gouache, watercolor, and collage, and she now works primarily as a digital artist.
Art has been part of Nazli’s life for as long as she can remember. She fell in love with art at 3 years old, and it has been a source of joy and relaxation ever since. Her mother, also a very talented artist, always encouraged her interest. Some of her earliest memories include drawing side by side with her mother every New Year’s Eve, a house with fireworks and Christmas trees on one side, and ladies in party dresses on the other.
After studying illustration in school, she went on to study photography at one of Turkey’s most prestigious fine art universities, Yildiz Technical University. But midway through her program, while doing a project with a local performance group, Nazli followed her creative call and ran away with the circus in 2011! She has been performing with the circus ever since, traveling through Qatar, Georgia, Tajikistan, Greece, France, Poland, and many other European countries. Her primary discipline is the hula hoop, as well as teaching performance.
Originally from Istanbul, Nazli moved to Belgium in October 2019, to study circus pedagogy for a year. Just two months before her time in Belgium was supposed to end, she met her now husband, fell in love, and decided to stay. Now, in Namur, Belgium, she is creating a collective to develop performing arts in the city and organize events, with a studio opening soon as well.
Growing up in Istanbul heavily influenced and shaped Nazli’s worldview and approach to art. Here is how she describes her early life there, and its place in her life:

“Istanbul is such a vast city, simultaneously a multi-cultural and historic city, the bridge between east and west. I grew up with the influences of more than one culture. My Balkan roots from my family, eastern traditions, and western ideologies made me always gravitate toward art, intellectualism, and respect for history, knowledge, and my elders. Being a kid in Istanbul also meant playing every day on the streets with all the kids from the neighborhood, eating bread with tomato paste on top, made from one's mother for everyone, then going back to play. It was long summer evenings outside, playing ball games while mothers drank tea and fathers spoke about their cars. In my teenage years, I fell into Istanbul's history and traveled to all the historical places -- which are many -- with historical novels in my hands. I got into Old Istanbul stories, Ottoman history, Byzantium history, and even early human first civilization on these lands. Istanbul is a world of its own, and my life's different periods have been spent in its different corners – still so many more to be discovered and experienced. Istanbul is the world's biggest book to me, waiting to be read more, and I do owe my personality to its unique existence.”
Splitting her career between children’s illustration and performing, Nazli’s life is filled with her creative passions. As an artist, Nazli takes inspiration from the tiny details of ordinary life. Her work is nostalgic, playful, and vivid. Sketching with pencil and marker when inspiration hits, Nazli develops and finishes her pieces in digital media.
Nazli is interested in illustrating children’s picture books, middle grade, and covers for any category! She particularly loves to show scenes of village life, grandparent stories, and historical fiction. With her fantastic line work, she loves to showcase details in both grand architecture and scenery, as well as everyday life. A dream project for Nazli would be to illustrate a new edition of a classic children’s text.
