Your Painting… Is it finished? How can you tell? This week's BobBlast helps me know when my painting is finished and signature ready!
First Step:
•Hang the painting on the wall
•Get it away from the area you painted it in
•Now look at it
Another way to look at it is by taking a photo of it with your phone - THEN look at it. I find it easier to spot areas that don’t feel right by looking at it in a smaller format. The part that is bothersome to you will be very apparent!
I title the painting from the very beginning. In fact, before I even start the painting, I commit to the title by writing it on the back of the canvas or paper. I also journal about what I want to communicate with the painting image - and probably most importantly - why I am doing this painting in the first place! These simple steps make it less confusing for me to know when my painting is finished.
When the painting matches my title, it’s finished! If I get more ideas for this painting, I start another painting. If I continue to change my mind and layer ideas on top of other ideas, the painting becomes confusing and unclear.
When I jury competitions, for entry and awards, I look for the artist’s intentions and how clearly they communicated. For me, when a painting has no title, the artist appears to send a message of indecisiveness and confusion.
When I critique my own work, I make adjustments then stop when I feel that my message is clear. Watch the Demo to see how I critique and make the necessary changes.
I don’t rely on others to say whether or not the painting is finished… or title my painting. If I do… then it becomes THEIR painting! Painting is not a team effort. Critique your own work!
Our gift to you this week… How to Paint From Your Heart.
