WKU celebrating Black History Month
WKU kicked off its celebration of Black History Month 2023 on Wednesday with a ceremony featuring student performances and keynote speaker Rev. Shawn Sales, Pastor of Loving Springs Baptist Church.
 
The Opening Ceremony was sponsored by the WKU Intercultural Student Engagement Center (ISEC), Black Student Alliance, WKU Chapter of NAACP, and Epsilon Theta Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma. Faculty, staff, and students were honored during the event in the Harbaugh Club at Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium.
 
Awards were presented to Cierra Waller, Assistant Director for The Center for Innovative Teaching & Learning; Fabian Alvarez, Assistant Professor in the Department of English; Michael Diugu, a freshman psychology major; and Jacob Brown, a sophomore sports management major.

Events continue at 7 tonight with Black History Month Night at Hilltopper Basketball at Diddle Arena. Living Learning Communities recognized by ACPA
ACPA-College Student Educators International announced that WKU Living Learning Communities program has won the 2023 ACPA Collaborative Excellence Award. The award will be presented at the 2023 ACPA Convention March 26-29 in New Orleans.
Spotlight: The Dance Project
WKU dance students will present The Dance Project 2023 this weekend at the Gordon Wilson Hall Lab Theatre. Showtimes are 7:30 tonight, 7:30 p.m. Friday, 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $7.
Biology professor presents keynote at conference
Dr. Rodney King, a member of the WKU Biology Department and University Distinguished Professor, delivered the keynote address at the Viruses of Microbes conference held Jan. 26-27 at Northumberland University, Newcastle upon Tyne, in the United Kingdom.
'Kentucky Life' episode features interview with WKU professor
KET’s Kentucky Life episode this week will feature the work of WKU graduates Elon Justice and Corwin Spaulding, along with an interview with WKU History professor Anthony Harkins, filmed at the Kentucky Museum. The segment on “Hillbilly Days” is part of episode 3 of the new Kentucky Life season which will air on KET at 7 p.m. CT Saturday (February 4). Dr. Harkins is the author of the award-winning book Hillbilly: A Cultural History of an American Icon and the co-editor of the award-winning Appalachian Reckoning: A Region Responds to Hillbilly Elegy. WKU graduate Chip Polston is the host of Kentucky Life.

Staff Excellence Awards 2023
Each year, WKU recognizes staff members who demonstrate outstanding and meritorious service with Staff Excellence Awards. Nominations are being accepted through Feb. 14. Categories for 2023: Customer Service Award; Teamwork Award; Student Support Award; Unsung Hero Award; Part-Time Award; and WKU Affiliate Award -- Aramark, Sodexo and Barnes & Noble Employees.

WKU's Gordon Ford College of Business announced the recipients of its 2022-2023 Awards for Faculty Excellence.
WKU Student Publications announces Summer 2023 fellowships
WKU Student Publications announced a class of 10 Student Publications fellows for Summer 2023. Nine of the students will spend at least 10 weeks working in professional organizations this summer in internships tailored to help them grow their skills, and the 10th will cover news on the WKU campus.
Cultural Enhancement Series returns with presentation
The Potter College of Arts & Letters (PCAL) announced that the Cultural Enhancement Series is back. The “Kentucky Unexpected” series will begin with a presentation by Dr. William H. Turner, author of The Harlan Renaissance: A Memoir of Black Life in Appalachian Coal Towns, at 5 p.m. February 8 at the Jody Richards Hall Auditorium. The series continues with U.S. Poet Laureate Ada Limón at 7 p.m. February 27 at the Ivan Wilson Fine Arts Center Recital Hall and 2022 Kentucky Teacher of the Year Willie Carver at 5 p.m. March 28 at the Jody Richards Hall Auditorium.
Auhtor of Rust Belt Femme to present lecture February 15
Raechel Anne Jolie, author of the critically-acclaimed memoir Rust Belt Femme, will give a public lecture and lead a Creative Writing MFA seminar on Wednesday, February 15. The public portion of Jolie’s visit will take place at 4 p.m. in Ivan Wilson Fine Arts Center Recital Hall, room 189. All are welcome to attend. This event is being organized by the English Department’s D.E.I. Committee, with financial support from a PCAL D.E.I. Mini-Grant and the Gender and Women’s Studies program.
Black Male Scholars visit WKU
On Jan. 24, the Potter College of Arts and Letters (PCAL) and The Center for Gifted Studies brought the Bowling Green Junior High School Black Male Scholars to campus.

WKU Parking and Transportation Services has a reminder for the campus community about event parking for Hilltopper Basketball games tonight and Saturday afternoon.
