James Franklin Wood '52

December 31, 1933 - December 21, 2024

Tau brother James "Woody" Wood passed away on December 21 at the age of 90.

Woody pledged Kappa Sigma at UT Austin in 1952. After earning his Bachelor's degree, he served his country honorably in the U.S. Army and had a long and successful career as an investor in oil & gas and real estate ventures.

“Woody was not only the pledge brother of my uncle and the father of my friend and fraternity brother, Charlton, but he was also a brother to me," said Mike Sharpe '79. "He hosted us in his home over many years. We shared countless meals and phone calls during which we would always chat about UT athletics programs. I never saw him without a smile on his face, and I’ll certainly miss him."

"Woody was a big influence on the pledge classes of 1953 and 1954," said Mac Thompson '54. "We all looked up to him."

Woody was married to his beloved wife, Joan, for 58 years, until her passing in 2016. He was also preceded in death by his son, Charlton Wood '80, who died July 4, 2023.

He is survived by two children, Laurie E. Wood of Chicago, Illinois; Alan Wood and his wife, Andrea, of Woodway, Texas; and four grandchildren.
