Hose Bib Maintenance Tip

Here in the Midwest, heading towards the late fall season, most of us are done harvesting our gardens and cleaning out our flower beds. Since you no longer have to water your yards and gardens, it's time to remove your garden hose from the hose bib and let any trapped water drain. (A hose bib may also be called a spigot, Silcock or outdoor faucet.)

Most hose bibs are self-draining to prevent freeze ups from happening, but only if the port is open to drain. If you leave the garden hose attached, the hose bib can hold water. The water can freeze and expand, which could cause connected faucets, valves, and pipes within your home to freeze and break.

Trapped water inside of

“frost free” hose bib can freeze and expand causing the piping

to rupture. The break in this pipe cannot be seen until the hose is turned on, and can often flood

a home if you are unaware

of the damage.

It's as simple as that. Time to remove your garden hose from the hose bib. A ruptured hose bib can cause damage to your home and bank account. Prevent this from happening now.
