Building 'One Milwaukee'

Dear Friend,

October has been another month of positive momentum across the city of Milwaukee. We continue to make investments in reinvigorating underused spaces and attracting new economic development to the city. I’ve jokingly said that my favorite bird is the crane because I love seeing cranes around the skyline of our city. A number of cranes are flying high in Milwaukee now, and soon there will be more! I am pleased that Northwestern Mutual has started work on a $500 million project to reimagine its campus. This multi-year project will include hundreds of construction jobs and once finished ultimately bring 2,000 permanent employees to Milwaukee at the new building. The family-supporting careers resulting from the Northwestern Mutual investment are catalytic. Thank you to the leadership of Northwestern Mutual for believing in Milwaukee and to the staff at our Department of City Development who helped make this dream a reality.

Finally, I am working each day with our partners on the Common Council to finalize the 2024 budget. Together, we will adopt a budget in the first part of November that funds vital services and resources that residents, workers, and visitors in Milwaukee depend on each day. I appreciated all the voices and suggestions from residents, alderpersons, and community stakeholders as we developed next year’s fiscal plan.

Please don’t hesitate to contact my office. Enjoy the latest installment of the Mayor’s Message!

Congratulations to Northwestern Mutual as we celebrate the company's new investment in Milwaukee

What's new in Milwaukee

Milwaukee Downtown BID Jack-O-Lantern Event

I know many of you have taken part in a fun, spooky, and candy-filled Halloween season. My family enjoyed the second annual Jack-O-Lantern Jubilee at Red Arrow Park. I will admit to sampling the many treats available, and proudly led the kids’ costume parade around the park.

Happy Halloween!

Neighborhood Walk

Going out into our unique Milwaukee neighborhoods and knocking on doors is always a treat. I want to thank the Milwaukee Police Department for taking the time to knock on doors with me in the Grasslyn Manor neighborhood to learn more about what is going right in our city and what we can improve upon.

Hope to see you soon!

Milwaukee Fatherhood Summit

The 18th Annual Milwaukee Fatherhood Summit focused on providing resources and services to fathers while promoting healthy family relationships. I want to thank staff in my administration and community stakeholders for their work in organizing and hosting this important event. As we move forward, let’s create a strong coalition of fathers throughout our city.

$275 Million Investment to clean up Milwaukee Estuary

I joined Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Michael Regan and U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin on October 12 to celebrate a partnership that’s addressing a history of waterway contamination.

With the investment of hundreds of millions of dollars, the project will ultimately remove the Milwaukee Estuary from the list of 25 remaining U.S. Areas of Concern – highly environmentally degraded areas found across the Great Lakes basin. Many kudos to our federal representatives and President Joe Biden for their leadership.

Veolia North American is moving downtown

Another win for downtown Milwaukee! Boston-based Veolia North America is leasing office space in the ASQ Center at the corner of Wisconsin and Plankinton Avenues, for its Milwaukee office. They plan to move to the space by 2024. The new location will house corporate finance, accounting, human resources, and information technology operations. Welcome to Milwaukee!

Inaugural City Employee Recognition Awards (C.E.R.A.)

Spotlighting our amazing City of Milwaukee workforce was long overdue. The City Employee Recognition Awards (CERA) Ceremony honored five amazing, hard-working, and committed employees from several different City of Milwaukee departments. I want to commend award winners Kendria Donaldson, Tyronda Williams, Jannie Albright, Kate Riordan, and Phyllis Whitley (pictured here).

In our first year of the CERA awards, we had over 200 nominees! This underscores just how many amazing employees we have at the City of Milwaukee. Keep up the great work!

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month

There were wonderful festivities and events all month to celebrate Milwaukee’s Hispanic and Latino community in October.

I took particular pleasure in welcoming the United Community Center’s Latino Arts Strings, who performed for the Milwaukee Common Council.

Milwaukee's Central Library is 125 years old

The Central Library, the headquarters of our amazing Milwaukee Public Library, is now 125 years YOUNG. Since the 1800's the building has been a center of knowledge, learning, and fun. I encourage residents and visitors to Milwaukee to stop by these vital community institutions.

Milwaukee Public Schools Building and Trades Event

Milwaukee Public Schools and Milwaukee Tool teamed up to introduce high school students to careers in the trades earlier this month. There are great futures in building Milwaukee. Tradespeople earn good wages and take pride in their work. I am grateful to the companies and organizations that encourage young people to consider a career in the building trades.

Bucks in 6

Do I need to really say more?

Let’s give our new Bucks superstar Damian Lillard a Milwaukee welcome on our way to winning the NBA Championship this year!

Mayor’s Holiday Drive Kick-Off

The Holiday Drive is a joint effort between the City of Milwaukee and Milwaukee County to encourage donations of goods to organizations helping those in need during the holiday season.

This year, we will be supporting UNCOM (United Neighborhood Centers of Milwaukee). This fantastic organization is committed to strengthening city neighborhoods and we are happy to partner with them this year.

October was Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Domestic Violence Awareness Month evolved from a national “Day of Unity” held in October of 1981. The impact of domestic violence is complicated by the fact that the abuse is often not in the past, but something survivors must deal with day-to-day. There are often safety concerns, forcing them to focus on surviving, instead of thriving. Their abusers might have isolated them from family and friends or made them completely dependent on them financially. Survivors may even be emotionally manipulated or have mental health or substance misuse issues that are being used against them. This can be especially challenging for individuals who experience chronic mental illnesses or substance misuse.
