Dear Friends,
‘GOOD’ Friday?
It is the most solemn of days in our Christian tradition. Today we remember Jesus’ public mocking and crucifixion two thousand years ago. It is a day of fasting, reflecting, grieving . . . things we don’t typically do on ‘good’ days. There’a reasoning behind the puzzling nature of the name we give today.
There is a linguistic theory that ‘good’ is from ‘holy’ in Old English. ‘Holy’ also refers to that which is sacred. So Holy/Sacred/Good Friday makes sense. This theory is supported by linguists.
Another thought is that the goodness of this day is in Christ’s resurrection, when life overcame death and sin. Jesus’ resurrection couldn’t have happened unless he died. That makes sense too.
And then a third rationale is that the word ‘Good’ in Good Friday comes from ‘God’, therefore ‘God Friday’. Linguists generally say that there’s no real scholarly connection, and so suggest it is speculative.
However you relate to the name ‘Good Friday’, I hope that it is a prayerful, holy, and reflective day for you and I hope that one or both of the Good Friday services will be part of your day.
Blessings,
Karen+

Last Saturday we
had 42 folks
from across the bay
visit our gardens
on the annual free
garden tour. We had
3 generations
of Dickinsons to
greet them and give tours,
along with Aer and
Hannah. A western
bluebird observed and
gave his wisdom as well.

NEEDING PRAYER SUPPORT?
Prayer is one of those things we often think about, might feel inadequate about, believe in but might be unsure how to proceed. How we pray is sometimes unique to each of us. The Church provides help in many ways. If you find yourself in need, of any kind (emotional, physical, spiritual, guidance, etc) consider how St. Stephen's can support you:
* there is a prayer chain of committed pray-ers (who maintain confidentiality).
* tell people about your answers to prayer! and the miracles you witness, or how prayer changes YOU.
Please submit prayer requests to Rev. Karen.
