Creating an Environment for Safe and Healthy Sleep in Child Care Programs

Along with nutrition, physical activity, and secure attachments, sleep is a basic requirement for a child's growth and brain development. Sleep is important for health and wellness, especially for growing infants and young children. Unfortunately, the amount of time children spend sleeping seems to be declining.
If only sleep-deprived children just got drowsy and went to sleep, but generally this is not the case. Sleep-deprived children are often impulsive, hyperactive, and are more likely to hurt themselves. In other words, they fall apart. A recent study found that children who don't get enough sleep can mistakenly be thought to have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and children who don't have a regular bedtime are more likely to have ADHD-like behaviors (Pressman & Imber, 2011). Poor sleep is also linked to obesity and impaired immune function.
Healthy practices for sleep, including those that reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and Sudden Unexplained Infant Death (SUID), support child health and family well-being. By becoming knowledgeable about sleep, you can help busy families lay the foundation for lifelong healthy sleep habits.

What is Vroom?
Vroom is a new website and app that focuses on early childhood brain development. Vroom is a set of tools and messages that empower parents and caregivers to be brain builders. It elevates what parents and caregivers are already doing right and enables them to make the most out of their time with their time with their children. New Science tells us that our children's first years are when they develop the foundation for all future learning. Every time we connect with them, it's not just their eyes that light up-it's their brains too. In these moments, half a million neurons fire at once, taking in all the things we say and do. We can't see it happening, but it's all there at work. That's why Vroom is here.
Vroom turns shared moments into brain building moments. Whether it's mealtime, bathtime, or anytime in between, there are always ways to nurture our children's growing minds.

NAP SACC

Childhood obesity is a national crisis and we as child care providers have the power to make changes that can reverse the obesity crisis.
The Nutrition and Physical Activity Self-Assessment for Child Care (NAP SACC) Program is a program to learn more about childhood obesity and how we can implement changes in our programs to help reverse this crisis.

QRIS
Quality Rating Improvement System
is part of The Office of Child Care.
All licensed programs who are NOT participating at this time are a level one, which is the minimum level- by engaging in the QRIS process your program can choose to demonstrate higher levels of quality.
This amazing achievement shows the true professionalism of the Early Childhood Education field. These providers are dedicated to providing quality child care and have made a commitment to ongoing, continuous quality improvement.

Family Connections is truly excited to be a part of this movement.

That includes:
43 *** 3 star programs
16 **** 4 star programs
16 ***** 5 star programs

Plus more that 40 programs that have made a Commitment to Quality care above the minimum licensing requirements! These programs are either working on setting goals in a Quality Improvement Plan (QIP) or developing a Portfolio that documents how they meet the 33 early learning standards.

Do you know a child that exhibits these behaviors?
  • Defiance/Opposition?
  • Sassing/Talking back/Swearing?
  • Tantrums?
  • Self-injurious behavior?
  • Lying/Stealing?
  • Aggression/Destructive Behavior?
  • Hyperactivity?

Options Counseling and Family Services is now offering Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT), an evidence-based practice that works with the parent and child together to help decrease the above behaviors while strengthening the parent-child relationship. Parents are coached on how to use PCIT (labeled praise, attunement, self esteem enhancement skills, active listening and reflection) in the moment through the use of a one-way mirror and wireless earphone. PCIT is designed for children between the ages of two and seven who have a parent/caregiver who is able to participate with them in weekly sessions.

Included is a flyer for more information about PCIT. If you know a child/family that may benefit from this service please encourage them to call Options Counseling and Family Services at our Springfield office. 541-762-1971, or the Eugene office at 541-687-6983.
