Sharon Strader, owner of Prescott Home-Based Business Power of Three, pours soy candles in her home studio.

Prescott's Home-Based Businesses Look to Grow

Every home-based business has an origin story. For Brenda Steinburg, it was a personal desire for more natural skin care products that led her on the journey that became B’s Bubbles. For Sharon Strader, it was a lifetime of craftiness and an interest in the science of soy candle making brought Power of Three Candles to life. For Chantal Crate, her Custom Creations came from a family hobby turned business during the COVID pandemic.

“I originally started making soap for my own personal use,” says Steinburg, “but in 2013 I was introduced to the Prescott Farmers’ and Crafters’ Market and, after a successful season, B’s Bubbles was launched.”

Celebrating 11 years in business this December, B’s Bubbles has become a local favourite at craft shows and markets throughout the area. She has also launched an online store shipping across Canada after successfully adding all-natural facial and body creams to her lineup of products.

Brenda Steinburg of B's Bubbles is a fixture at local markets and craft shows with her natural, hand-made soaps and skin care products.

Chantal Crate also turned a long-time passion into her home-based business when in 2020 the COVID pandemic led her to re-evaluate her priorities.

“Stained glass was really more of a mental health release for me in 2020, but my husband Jason encouraged me to try selling some pieces,” says Crate, “I did markets throughout the area starting in 2021, and this summer expanded to the Prescott Pop-Ups.”

Offering stained glass pieces of different sizes, custom commissions, and do-it-yourself classes, Chantal’s Custom Creations offers both the local, hand-made products that visitors love while providing an experience with her Creation Station studio at the Pop-Ups.

Chantal Crate's stained glass pieces can be found at the Prescott Pop-Ups and various winter shows in the area.

Sharon Strader’s journey to launching Power of Three Candles came through a lifetime of being creative and crafty, dabbling in various media while pursuing her career as a teacher. In 2020, she became interested in the science of soy candles, finding that she enjoyed working to create fragrances and high-quality products. She also discovered that there was a significant demand for natural wax candles, and Power of Three was born.

While her home-based business is successful, being a draw at the 15-20 markets she attends in the area each year, Strader views Power of Three as a hobby that she’s eager to put her time into.

“I love making connections for collaborations and attending variety of markets in the area, my career keeps me busy from day to day,” she says.

While teaching keeps Strader’s focus on regular markets as her business expands, both Crate and Steinburg are interested in turning their home-based businesses into brick-and-mortar retailers in the coming years. A previous stay at the Prescott Pop-Ups has led Steinburg to look toward a B’s Bubbles storefront in the future incorporating other natural products, and Crate’s first summer at the Creation Station has spurred planning for a future year-round studio and gallery space in Downtown Prescott.

While they pursue different paths moving into 2025 and beyond, for Brenda, Chantal, and Sharon, their home-based businesses are deeply rooted in their home community.

“Since the inception of Power of Three, I have had so much support locally, here in my hometown of Prescott,” says Strader, “from repeat customers to creating signature candles for businesses, as well as meeting the most wonderful people, I feel honoured. For every household that my candles make it into, I am grateful.”

Notice to Businesses about Sign Permit Requirements and Associated Design Guidelines for Downtown.

Prescott’s Downtown & RiverWalk District Sign Design Guidelines are a tool businesses can use to inform the design of meaningful, high quality signage that positively contributes to Prescott’s visual landscape and placemaking efforts. Signs located within the Downtown Core/RiverWalk District zoning area must comply with the Downtown Sign Design Guidelines and Sign By-Law #16-2019.

Signs that identify particular establishments are an important design element because they give character to public places and contribute to pedestrian scale and ambiance.

All businesses are required to obtain a sign permit prior to installing new or updating existing signage.
