[COLUMBUS, OH] -- Columbus City Council is now accepting applications for the newly formed Commission on Immigrant and Refugee Affairs, a dedicated platform designed to elevate immigrant voices in city policy and decision-making.

The Commission on Immigrant and Refugee Affairs was created through Ordinance 2517-2024, sponsored by Councilmember Lourdes Barroso de Padilla in November last year, to provide a direct link between Columbus' immigrant communities and city leadership. Recognizing the important role of immigrants and refugees in shaping the city’s future, the Commission will serve as a platform for advocacy, empowerment, and meaningful change.

Barroso de Padilla emphasizes the importance of this effort, stating, “Establishing a Commission on Immigrant and Refugee Affairs is a vital step toward making our city a more welcoming place for all. In 2022, I started the Immigrants Make Columbus project in partnership with the OSU College of Social Work to ensure the voices of immigrants and refugees are heard. I’m excited to start this commission as a tangible next step. Together, we can create a city where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.”

The Commission will consist of 15 members who reflect the diverse backgrounds and experiences of Columbus’ immigrant communities. One seat is specifically designated for an emerging leader aged 18-25. Commissioners will serve staggered terms of either two or three years, with opportunities for renewal.

Responsibilities of Commissioners:

  • Shape the Commission’s direction by adopting by-laws and creating rules of procedure.
  • Develop an annual work plan and engagement report, highlighting accomplishments and challenges.
  • Monitor and advocate for policies related to immigration, welfare, and other key issues impacting immigrants.
  • Evaluate existing city policies and provide actionable recommendations for improvement.
  • Foster community engagement and lead meaningful discussions on the future of Columbus as a welcoming, inclusive city.

Why Apply?

This is a unique opportunity to lead transformational efforts, connect diverse communities, and create a more inclusive Columbus. As a commissioner, you’ll have a direct hand in shaping policies and programs that impact lives every day.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Applicants must reside in the City of Columbus.
  • Applicants must identify as an immigrant, refugee, or a child of immigrants or refugees.
  • One seat is reserved for an emerging leader aged 18-25.
  • Commissioners will serve staggered terms—either an initial two-year or three-year term—with opportunities for renewal.

Columbus City Council encourages individuals with a strong commitment to community advocacy, public policy, and immigrant rights to apply. Applications will be accepted until February 16, 2025.
