Meet Our New Disability Resource Coordinator (DRC)
Nicole Sortino
A little about Nicole...
Nicole lives in the Town of Kirkland with her husband and son. She is a 'newer resident' of NYS, having moved from Clearwater, FL in 2017.
While attending the University of South Florida, Nicole began her hospitality career with Hilton Worldwide, hired at an entry level front office position. Within a few years she had become department head, and received a wide array of training from the organization.
Her hospitality management experience then became a bridge to classroom instruction, job readiness, and employability skills.
"I found an area of passion working with at-risk youth," Nicole says, "instilling confidence, and helping members of my community level their playing field to access gainful employment."
After providing consultant services to the WDB for the "Jobs JumpStart" and "Digital Customer Service" training projects, she will now serve as the Disability Resource Coordinator for the WDB's NY SCION grant project.
Nicole says, "I look forward to serving the community in a new way, while doing what I love!"

BUSINESSES: WE CAN HELP YOU UPSKILL YOUR WORKFORCE
The Workforce Development Board of Herkimer, Madison & Oneida (WDB/HMO) has partnered with the NYCAN (NY College Apprenticeship Network) grant to reimburse on-the-job training costs for advanced manufacturing companies that have less than 50 employees and a registered apprentice program.
Wages can be reimbursed at 50% up to $25 an hour for six months of on-the-job training (OJT) with minimum paperwork. The undirected funding provides many benefits for small to medium-sized manufacturing companies and ensures the apprentice is trained in accordance with the company’s standards and procedures.
If you would like to know how your company can take advantage of this funding or know of a company that would benefit, please contact Meghan McBennett at mmcbennett@working-solutions.org.

Spotlight on Workers with a Disability
|
|
New federal data shows that a greater percentage of people with disabilities were in the workforce in 2022. (Thinkstock)
The employment rate for Americans with disabilities has reached an all-time high, federal officials say.
Among people with disabilities nationally, 21.3% had a job in 2022. That’s up from 19.1% the previous year and represents the highest rate on record since the government began tracking such data in 2008.
The snapshot of disability employment last year comes in a new report issued by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics. The agency collects data on people with disabilities in the job market as part of its Current Population Survey, which polls 60,000 households each month about employment and unemployment.
Workers with disabilities were more frequently self-employed and about twice as likely to work part time as compared to others, according to the Labor Department data.
Nearly 80% of those with disabilities were considered to be “not in the labor force” meaning that they were not employed or seeking work. The report indicates that the “vast majority” of these people — all but 3% — did not want to have a job.
Even with the increase in disability employment, the Labor Department found that the unemployment rate for individuals with disabilities remained about twice as high as for typically-developing individuals. And, people with disabilities across all age groups were “much less likely to be employed.”
