As the weather warms you may notice we ask for donations to care for the incredible influx of younger animals that cross our doors. But amidst all the younger animals, plenty of older dogs, cats, and bunnies are also awaiting their new loving homes.

Today, I want to share the stories of two older animals who found themselves alone at the shelter after years of being in loving, stable homes. Due to their age, many potential adopters didn’t consider them, so they waited for days and days before the right people arrived to adopt them.

Ollie’s family consisted of two humans and four other cats. The humans were about to move and decided they could only take four cats. Ollie was the oldest, most medically needed cat they owned, so they decided he would be the cat that didn’t make the move.  The team knew he suffered from severe dental disease when they whiffed his breath during his exam.  Ollie needed to have most of his teeth removed. Now, aside from being old, Ollie was toothless…not the most fetching candidate for the average adopter. But Ollie lucked out. He caught the eye of a volunteer who had the pleasure of caring for a toothless cat before, and she couldn’t resist offering Ollie a new home.

Then there is Penny, an eight-year-old lab whose elderly owner entered hospice without family or friends wanting to provide a home for her long-time canine companion Penny came into our care. Penny suffered from chronic skin and ear infections that required ongoing medical care. Despite the discomfort her medical condition caused, she was a joyful senior who desperately wanted to go home with anyone willing to get her out of the shelter. Penny was on cloud nine when she discovered that her new home had two doggy friends and a feline buddy. Her adopter shared, “It’s as if Penny has always been with us.”

Age and illness are the main reasons dogs and cats take extra time to find new loving homes. Donors like you are the reason WCHS can provide animals with care for as long as it takes for them to find their next home and is able to provide veterinary care to ill and injured animals.

On Ollie and Penny’s behalf, thank you for making our lifesaving work possible. With the cost of medications, insurance, pet food, utilities, and so much more always rising, we genuinely value the impact your gift makes on every animal’s life.

With kindest regards,
