Dear Green Valley Community,

Recently a student made inappropriate, racist comments toward a staff member. This behavior was/is unacceptable and troubling, as it reflects a broader concern about students feeling emboldened to use harmful, hateful language. The only way to heal/grow our school is for open conversations and real change.

While open conversations are essential to creating the change we want, it is also very important to share that direct information about disciplinary actions is not something I can discuss. That is a private matter for the family and I to work on. I'm sure every single family can identify with not wanting their child's mistakes made public.

With the staff member's permission, our school staff will engage in a thoughtful, school-wide discussion about this issue during our Professional Development Day on February 18th. I am working closely with our site director, Dr. Hong Nyguen, who is also our district director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion to ensure we handle this matter with the seriousness and care it deserves.

I want to give a huge shout out to our PTA for being deeply invested in helping us bring about positive change that embraces the kindness and inclusive environment we want for our school. As our demographic becomes increasingly diverse, we need to guide, and teach our students about how to be respectful members of our school community. We simply cannot be a great school if our students do not feel they are safe from harmful words and actions.

The teaching staff and I are committed to fostering a safe, inclusive environment for all students, staff, and families. My door is always open for any questions, concerns, or conversations you would like to have regarding this matter or any other. Together, we can continue to build a supportive and respectful community.

Thank you for your attention and partnership. Together we make Green Valley.
