Dear Families of the MS 104 Community:

Happy Monday! I hope everyone enjoyed the weekend. A week ago, a major earthquake struck in Syria and Turkey, causing unthinkable damage and a tragic number of deaths. As of this morning, it is reported that more than 36,000 lives have been lost across these regions. I am deeply saddened by this tragedy and the destruction that has resulted due to the earthquake. My thoughts are with all of the victims and their families and loved ones during this difficult time, as well as all of the survivors that face great challenges ahead as they begin to think about rebuilding what has been lost.

Respect for All Week Starts Today!

As part of our efforts to foster a school environment that promotes safety and inclusion for all, we will be participating in the DOE's Respect for All Week, which begins today and runs through Friday, February 17th. Our student council has developed a plan that will acknowledge various elements and values of the Respect for All vision and mission, with each day will be marked by a different theme. The theme days are as follows:

• Monday February 13^th is Antibullying and Anti cyberbullying Day. As middle schoolers navigate their way on and offline, let's ensure we are treating our peers with respect and stand up to those who don't! Wear BLUE to promote the prevention of bullying!

• Tuesday February 14^th is Celebrate Kindness and Be an Ally Day. Wear PINK or RED to show that you are an ally, someone who takes action to support a group with which they do not identify. Celebrate compassion for others through random acts of kindness. Be the change you wish to see!

• Wednesday February 15^th is Gender Identity, Sexual Orientation, and LGBTQ+ Pride and Acceptance Day. Wear Rainbow 🏳️‍🌈to show support!

• Thursday February 16^th is Respect for Diversity Day. Proudly display your country's flag and/or wear traditional cultural attire. Take this opportunity to showcase who you are! 🌎🌍🌏

• Friday February 17^th is No One Eats Alone Day. Wear PURPLE to stand up to social isolation and end it once and for all! Friday is a day we encourage students to move out of their comfort zone and make conversation with someone new! Please visit this website to learn more about the No One Eats Alone. There will be activities planned for each lunch period. 

I thank our entire community for continuing to build the best possible environment for all of our students and families.

Celebrating Black History Month

The month of February marks Black History Month and provides us all with an opportunity to acknowledge, reflect upon, and celebrate the countless contributions that members of the Black community have made. Assistant Principal Michelle McCaffrey and Social Studies teacher Christine Sugrue have worked to ensure that we are honoring this month in a variety of ways. Some of our efforts include:

• Our "Histagram" project in which our cafeteria is decorated with images of and quotes from members of the Black community that made great impacts on our country.
• During our morning newscasts, the news team will highlight a member of the Black community and acknowledge their contributions and influence on our culture
• On March 8th, we will be holding grade wide assemblies for our Black History Tribute Assembly program.

These are some of the ways in which we are working to celebrate Black History Month. We look forward to engaging our students in these activities throughout February.

Comedy Night Was A Major Hit!

Thank you to all members of community, both present and past, that attend our first ever in person Comedy Night last Thursday. The event was a huge success and a great time was had by all that attended. It was so great to see many of you in attendance laughing the night away with one another. I am so glad we had yet another opportunity to come together as a community and partake in some fun while raising money for our PTA. Thank yo every person that made a donation to the event!

A very special thanks to our Co-PTA President JR Havlan for organizing the event, lining up the incredibly funny comics, and performing for us as well! A big thank you to Co-PTA president Suzy Mody for running the snack cart and and stand! And thank you to all of our parent volunteers who helped set up and break down the event.

I think its safe to say that Comedy Night at 104 is here to stay! I look forward to seeing many of you at our next community event.

庆祝黑人历史月

二月是黑人历史月，我们所有人都有机会承认、反思和庆祝黑人社区成员做出的无数贡献。助理校长 Michelle McCaffrey 和社会研究老师 Christine Sugrue 努力确保我们以各种方式纪念这个月。我们的一些努力包括：

¡Feliz lunes! Espero que todos hayan disfrutado el fin de semana. Hace una semana, un gran terremoto golpeó Siria y Turquía, causando daños impensables y un trágico número de muertes. Hasta esta mañana, se informa que se han perdido más de 36.000 vidas en estas regiones. Estoy profundamente entristecido por esta tragedia y la destrucción que ha resultado debido al terremoto. Mis pensamientos están con todas las víctimas y sus familias y seres queridos durante este momento difícil, así como con todos los sobrevivientes que enfrentan grandes desafíos al comenzar a pensar en reconstruir lo que se ha perdido.

¡La semana de respeto por todos comienza hoy!

Como parte de nuestros esfuerzos para fomentar un entorno escolar que promueva la seguridad y la inclusión para todos, participaremos en la Semana de Respeto para Todos del DOE, que comienza hoy y termina el viernes 17 de febrero. Nuestro consejo estudiantil ha desarrollado un plan que reconocerá varios elementos y valores de la visión y misión de Respeto para Todos, y cada día estará marcado por un tema diferente. Los días temáticos son los siguientes:

• El lunes 13 de febrero es el Día Antibullying y Anti cyberbullying. A medida que los estudiantes de secundaria navegan en línea y fuera de línea, ¡asegurémonos de tratar a nuestros compañeros con respeto y hacer frente a aquellos que no lo hacen! ¡Vístase de AZUL para promover la prevención del acoso escolar!

• El martes 14 de febrero es el Día de celebrar la bondad y ser un aliado. Usa ROSA o ROJO para mostrar que eres un aliado, alguien que toma acción para apoyar a un grupo con el que no se identifica. Celebre la compasión por los demás a través de actos de bondad al azar. ¡Sé el cambio que deseas ver!

• El miércoles 15 de febrero es el Día de la Identidad de Género, la Orientación Sexual y el Orgullo y la Aceptación LGBTQ+. ¡Usa Rainbow 🏳️‍🌈 para mostrar tu apoyo!

• El jueves 16 de febrero es el Día del Respeto a la Diversidad. Muestre con orgullo la bandera de su país y/o use atuendos culturales tradicionales. ¡Aprovecha esta oportunidad para mostrar quién eres! 🌎🌍🌏

• El viernes 17 de febrero es el Día de Nadie Come Solo. ¡Vístete de MORADO para hacer frente al aislamiento social y acabar con él de una vez por todas! ¡El viernes es un día en el que alentamos a los estudiantes a salir de su zona de confort y conversar con alguien nuevo!

Agradezco a toda nuestra comunidad por continuar construyendo el mejor ambiente posible para todos nuestros estudiantes y familias.

Celebrando el Mes de la Historia Negra

El mes de febrero marca el Mes de la Historia Negra y nos brinda a todos la oportunidad de reconocer, reflexionar y celebrar las innumerables contribuciones que han hecho los miembros de la comunidad negra. La subdirectora Michelle McCaffrey y la maestra de estudios sociales Christine Sugrue han trabajado para garantizar que estemos honrando este mes de varias maneras. Algunos de nuestros esfuerzos incluyen:

• Nuestro proyecto "Histagram" en el que nuestra cafetería está decorada con imágenes y citas de miembros de la comunidad negra que tuvieron un gran impacto en nuestro país.
• Durante nuestros noticieros matutinos, el equipo de noticias destacará a un miembro de la comunidad negra y reconocerá sus contribuciones e influencia en nuestra cultura.

¡La noche de comedia fue un gran éxito!

Gracias a todos los miembros de la comunidad, tanto presentes como pasados, que asistieron a nuestra primera Noche de comedia en persona el jueves pasado. El evento fue todo un éxito y todos los asistentes se lo pasaron en grande. Fue genial ver a muchos de ustedes presentes riéndose toda la noche unos con otros. Estoy muy contento de haber tenido otra oportunidad de unirnos como comunidad y participar en la diversión mientras recaudamos dinero para nuestra PTA. ¡Gracias a todas las personas que hicieron una donación para el evento!

¡Un agradecimiento muy especial a nuestro copresidente de la PTA, JR Havlan, por organizar el evento, organizar los cómics increíblemente divertidos y actuar para nosotros también! ¡Muchas gracias a la presidenta de la Co-PTA, Suzy Mody, por manejar el carrito de bocadillos y estar de pie!
