Today, WHO is launching the Health Inequality Data Repository, the most comprehensive global collection of publicly available disaggregated data and evidence on population health and its determinants. The repository allows for tracking health inequalities across population groups and over time, by breaking down data according to group characteristics, ranging from education level to ethnicity.
On March 30, District Judge Reed O’Connor ruled in the Braidwood Management v Becerra case that not only was Braidwood Management not required to cover pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), a medicine that prevents HIV infection, due to its religious beliefs, but also that the US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) had no federal jurisdiction in mandating coverage of various preventive services. This ruling confirmed his prior ruling in September 2022 and threw the future of coverage for preventive services into question. O’Connor has a history of rulings on the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

Physicians work hard to provide care that delivers the best possible outcomes to their patients. Unfortunately, their efforts haven’t always been appropriately recognized. I don’t mean that doctors are poorly compensated—although, like many workers, their salaries aren’t keeping up with inflation. The issue here is that they’re often incentivized to deliver more care rather than more impactful care. Under the fee-for-service model that has governed care reimbursement in the U.S. for most of our country’s history, providers are paid per procedure or service provided. This means that the money is in volume, and many providers’ revenue streams are tuned to high-volume services: office visits, outpatient procedures, testing, etc.
Health disparities aren’t just a result of the inequities in the healthcare system, but also other socioeconomic areas including housing, nutrition and education. To tackle these challenges, the healthcare industry is going to need to work with other sectors, declared Hans Kluge, regional director for Europe at the World Health Organization.
