My favorite part of the Baptismal Rite comes shortly after the candidate or sponsors have made their many promises. The Celebrant then turns to the gathered assembly (all of you, all of us) and asks, "Will you who witness these vows do all in your power to support these persons in their life in Christ?" And we all proclaim, "We will!"
Some of you may have heard me talk about this before. But I love this acknowledgement that Christianity is a team sport. We are not meant to do this alone. In the baptized life, we rely on each other and we are there for each other. We do this in many ways, but the Baptismal promise is specifically to help each other to keep the Baptismal Covenant, to continue and deepen in our lives in Christ.
This Sunday at 11:00, we'll make this promise as we baptize Wesley and Becham White. Please keep them in your prayers as they prepare for Holy Baptism this weekend. And then we'll all together show up for them for the rest of their lives, supporting them in their lives in Christ. This is what it means to be the Church.
