The Robert H. Boyle Lifetime Achievement Award

The "Robert H. Boyle Lifetime Achievement Award" is named after the founder of the Hudson River Fishermen's Association. It is not intended to be an annual award. Rather it would only go to someone who has gone "above and beyond" by virtue of their contributions to conservation, and the angling community. This very special award is almost as much to preserve the legacy of our founder as it is to honor one of our GOATS (Greatest Of All Time) members.

The conclave of past winners of the club’s Pete Barrett Achievement Award selected Capt. Chas Stamm to receive the "Robert H. Boyle Lifetime Achievement Award". Chas is only the third person to receive the award. He was preceded by Arnie Ulrich & Pete Barrett.

After being honored with the HRFA's Pete Barrett Award in 1995 Chas went on to become President of the club for 3 consecutive years (1996-98). Some of his many contributions include:

  • taking over publication of the newsletter replete with color photos,
  • redesigning our logo using modernized script and a striped bass replacing a largemouth bass,
  • expanding the reach of the HRFA by cultivating relationships with like-minded organizations such as Clean Ocean Action,
  • working with Glenn Blank & Darren Cardinal to charter boat trips for kids,
  • setting up PayPal for the club,
  • working with Fred Rung and Fred's students to design our original website which has a wealth if information. Until recently he maintained and updated that website with current HRFA happenings http://hrfanj.org/
  • getting RFK Jr. to speak at a past Hooked on the Hudson event

Robert H. Boyle

Robert H. Boyle wrote for Sports Illustrated and was a champion defender of the environment, especially the Hudson River, which he loved. Mr. Boyle's mission was to restore the natural splendor of this marvelous and vibrant river, to stop industrial "progress" from profiteering on pollution with its net destructive impact on nature and livelihoods. His seminal book "The Hudson River - a natural and unnatural history", published in 1969, helped change the public's perceptions of the river by teaching what it once was and could become again.

These early efforts by our founder, along with the recreational and commercial fishermen who joined him, spearheaded the initial environmental movement to hold industries polluting the Hudson River liable. It was none other than Robert Boyle and his cohorts that created the Riverkeeper & Baykeeper programs which now constitute the international Waterkeeper Alliance.

We, as an organization of recreational fishermen, should never forget our roots and the many positive things we accomplished together over the years - from cleaning up the river to fighting for public access to it. And much more, of course.

FIGHT FOR THE HUDSON!

The Friend of the Hudson River Fishermen's Association Award

Cindy Zipf

We are thrilled to announce that Cindy Zipf, Executive Director of Clean Ocean Action, will be the recipient of our “Friend of the Hudson” award.

Truth is, Cindy is not only a friend to the Hudson River but the entire NY Bight and the vast ocean beyond as well. She remains a stalwart champion for an unspoiled ocean and has stood resolutely in front of big corporations, politicians and power brokers to professionally present her positions.

The history of the HRFA and Cindy stretches way back to the earliest days of Hooked on the Hudson. Most recently, we have spoken out together in asking NJ to slow down its rush to proliferate the Atlantic Ocean with offshore wind turbines until the science can catch up to their potential risks to the marine environment. We are united with COA in our passion to stop the pollution of our waterways. In short, we can’t think of a better single person or organization more deserving.

In 2024 Cindy received USA TODAY's "Women of the Year Award", a recognition of women who have made a significant impact in their communities and across the country.
