A study (done in 2014 and reported in Reading Psychology), implemented an independent silent reading (ISR) program with secondary students.   “The results indicated that students from the ISR groups made greater gains than the control group in total reading ability, reading comprehension, reading scores, and success/ability attribution.”  Independent reading has positive results in both elementary and secondary education.  These are compelling reasons for us to encourage our students to read independently!

5th Grader’s Eagles in Action Project:  PHIL’S FRIENDS 

Phil’s Friends is a Christian nonprofit organization started by Phil Zielke, who has survived cancer twice.  This group brings support and hope to those affected by cancer in the United States. They create amazing care packages, ongoing support through their Cards of Hope program, and spiritual support through prayer. 

When anyone requests a care package for someone who has cancer, (go to www.philsfriends.org) Phil’s Friends sends a package with  comforting items that people with cancer need and enjoy.

 First way you can help!  Consider donating any of these items :

 Another way to help is with offerings.  We are having a penny war to raise money for Phil’s Friends.   What that means is that pennies count against your total, so if you bring in pennies, you want to put them into the other teams’ bottle. There are 5 teams: Preschool, Kindergarten and 1st grade, 2nd and 3rd grade, 4th and 5th grade, and 6th, 7th and 8th grade.  Send in your silver coins (dollar bills are accepted too) for offering.  On Friday, February  the bottle with the most money wins!  

  The final request we have is that you pray for those who are being helped by Phil’s Friends.  We are so happy to be a part of making a difference to those who are dealing with cancer.

Tickets are $45 per person, or you may purchase a reserved table of 8 for $450 where you will have your own VIP table with reserved seating and a bottle of both red and white wine.

Tickets include appetizers, drink ticket, dessert, and non-bar beverages. Space is limited and we will sell out, so be sure to purchase your tickets soon.

FUNdraiser Information

We are very excited to share information with you regarding St. John’s Annual FUNdraiser being held at 6:00pm on Saturday, February 1 in the St. John’s Lutheran School gymnasium!

To make this FUNdraiser a success, the planning committee needs your help! 

• Be a SPONSOR: Make a monetary donation of any amount! Donations of $200 or more will be considered event sponsors.

• VOLUNTEER: There are many volunteer opportunities available. Please visit the sign-up genius or contact auction@stjohnslagrange.org with any questions. School family volunteers will receive service hours.

Attn: All 3rd thru 8th Graders the Variety Show Auditions are coming soon!

(In order to be in the show, please make sure you can attend the dress rehearsal and the show. The rehearsal is Thursday, March 13 from 2:30-4pm, and the performance is Friday, March 14 at 6:30pm. If those dates are good for you then please consider auditioning.)



Can you sing, dance, do a gymnastic routine, perform a skit, or some other talent? We want you!!! Auditions are on Tuesday, January 28, Wednesday, January 29, and Wednesday, February 5, right after school in the music room. Please pick a day that works for you and sign up today. The signup sheet is outside the gym door. You don’t have to do your entire act, just enough so we get the idea. Remember no lip synching allowed.

We are beginning a new semester of instrumental music! If your child (grades 4-8) is interested in trying a new band instrument, sign up for a 4-week trial! Students will have the opportunity to experience all of the band instruments and decide which one suits him/her best!
