Youth Workforce Lunch and Learn
December 1, 2023 - 12:00 p.m.
Dorchester Chamber of Commerce
Conference Center or Via Zoom
306 High Street, Cambridge, MD
Dorchester Chamber of Commerce Education Committee is teaming up with the new Dorchester County Public Schools Career Coaches to hold an information sharing session for all employers in Dorchester County. The Youth Workforce Lunch and Learn session is set for Friday, December 1, 2023, at Noon. The objective of the event is to help local businesses learn how to tap into the capable workforce found right here in our high schools. The session will cover multiple options for getting students engaged in the workforce while they are still attending high school.
The challenge with an adequate workforce is listed in the top three issues facing almost every business in the State of Maryland. We have a relatively untapped source of labor in our schools with the desire to learn and build job skills for their futures. We just need to make the connection between the employers and students in a way that works with student interests and educational needs. The Chamber believes the Career Coaches will be instrumental in making that happen.
“We are very excited about the creation of the new Career Coach roles at DCPS.” says Joel Bunde, Chair of the education committee. “They will be a tremendous resource for our students and a great asset for the business community as we work to solve the workforce challenges we face today.”
Over the past four years the Chamber has been working with DCPS and the State Department of Labor to help get the Youth Apprentice Program launched. While covid slowed progress, the program is now at a point where it can truly have a significant impact on the career development of our youth and a huge impact on the local workforce. The addition of Career Coaches within DCPS is going to be a catalyst for the growth of the program. There are many success stories locally and across the state for the Youth Apprentice Program already. The more students and businesses that get engaged in the program the faster we will realize improvements in our local workforce. It will be one of the key topics at the Lunch and Learn.
There are other ways to engage students and help with their career development and improved employability and those will also be discussed during the session. Some examples include internships (paid and unpaid), job shadowing, summer/seasonal employment, and just straight hiring a student while understanding and respecting the hours they are able to work while still in school.
The session will be held in the Chamber Conference Center and will have a webinar option for those that cannot make it to the in-person event. Lunch will be provided for those who attend in-person. There is no charge for the event, but you must register for either the in-person or online option.

Mushroom Company raises more than $1K for Salvation Army |
CAMBRIDGE — Following a raffle at the Mushroom Company’s first ever Family Fun Day, the organization raised $1,200 for The Salvation Army’s Washington Street location.
The Salvation Army was the charity of choice for employees of the Mushroom Company. The company’s HR Administrative Clerk Melannie Lozada Sostre said the company knew it wanted to donate the money from Family Fun Day to a charity, but weren’t sure of which charity.
“I was asking all the employees,” she said. “And two of the employees told me their story.”
“They provided shelter for him, clothes, food,” Lozada Sostre said.
For another employee, Lozada Sostre said The Salvation Army provided her and her family with coats and warm clothes for her first winter in Maryland after moving from Puerto Rico.

A New Leader at Chesapeake College's Cambridge Center: A Chat with Lorelly Solano |
The last time the Spy chatted with Lorelly Solano a few years ago, she had just begun her work at the Chesapeake Multicultural Resource Center. And her focus in 2019 was to help the organization train interpreters to help offer bilingual services on the Mid-Shore to various businesses and nonprofit institutions.
One of the schools that Lorelly worked closely with at the time was Chesapeake College, so it was not a surprise to find her almost five years later working with that institution as the new director of its Cambridge Center. As the Mid-Shore continues to grow with a diversity of cultures and languages, Dr. Solano was immediately attracted to the challenge and opportunity of making the Cambridge campus a regional leader in adult education for high school equivalency, English language acquisition for immigrants, and non-credit courses like skilled trades.
In her new role, Solano has made it a goal to mirror the community’s diversity within the Center, ensuring that when people visit, they see themselves represented.
Last month the Spy came by the Cambridge Center to learn more about Dr. Lorelly’s plans.
This video is approximately six minutes in length. For more information about Chesapeake College and its Cambridge Center, please go here.

New Historic Building Planned to be Built in Vienna |
VIENNA, MD - The Handsell House in Vienna is working towards building a new historic center.
The Nanticoke Historic Preservation Alliance [NHPA] wants to build a barn-like structure called the Three Cultures Center.
The center would be built behind the brick house known as the Handsell House. The acting president of NHPS, Midge Ingersoll, says while that old brick house has undergone renovations, it does not have AC or heat. So, it's not equipped to host events all year round. She says the Three Cultures Center would be used to host events and programs all year round.
Ingersoll says the property has a lot of history to it. To be exact, about three culturally significant events. Hence the name, Three Cultures Center.

Harriet Tubman Museum Spotlight: I got Shoes and More with Linda Harris |
Linda Harris is a force to be reckoned with: storyteller, non-profit executive, and shepherd to new and important art exhibits coming to Cambridge, in addition to being an amazing professional jazz singer and concert pianist who performs regularly in Cambridge and elsewhere.
Harris first came to Cambridge looking “for my freedom.”
“I was living in a bubble,” says Harris. In her original spoken word song, “Harriet’s Journey,” found on her album “I Got Shoes,” Harris tells of sitting on her bed watching the TV coverage of the George Floyd killing. She says, “I wept, and I wept like I never wept before…at that moment, I felt like my freedom was gone, and at that moment, the moment George Floyd took his last breath, I decided I needed to find my freedom.”
Remembering a book that her father had given her many years before, “Runaway Slave” about Tubman, Harris read the book. And read it again. Then, she came to Cambridge to find out more about Tubman. “Born into slavery in 1822, in 1849, she decided to walk. My way back to freedom was walking,” and so Harris and companions walked the Underground Railway from Brodess Plantation, where Tubman started, 158 miles to Philadelphia, PA. Harris says, “At the end of the walk, my freedom was restored.” And Harris had also found her new home.

It navigated its way through the waters with a temporary pause in Crisfield before reaching its final destination on Taylors Island in Dorchester County.

Preserving History: Volunteers Ensure the Nathan of Dorchester's Seaworthiness |
CAMBRIDGE, MD - While normally out on the waters of the Chesapeake Bay, the Nathan of Dorchester has been brought ashore in for a check-up at the Richardson Maritime Museum in Cambridge.
From a distance, the Nathan of Dorchester stands as a testament to the beauty of wooden ship craftsmanship. Up close, the telltale signs of rust and weathered wood narrate its rich history.
Pat Johnson, President of the Dorchester Skipjack Committee, proudly states, "The Nathan of Dorchester is the last authentic skipjack built on the Chesapeake Bay. It's been a preservation boat. As an organization, we are 30 years into taking care of the boat, preserving it."

Winners will be responsible to contact bakery and schedule pick up of the item won. Giving Tuesday is a global generosity movement unleashing the power of radical generosity. Giving Tuesday was created in 2012 as a simple idea: a day that encourages people to do good. Since then, it has grown into a year-round global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity. As a grass root, nonprofit breast cancer survivor support organization, we proudly say that ALL the funding we receive will remain in our community. Out of every dollar raised, $.72 goes back into WSW programs and services for our breast cancer survivors. It is only through loyal community partnerships that we are able to provide our unique services free to breast cancer survivors and their families while fulfilling our mission of awareness, education, and support to all those affected by breast cancer. WSW is not affiliated with any national organization and does not receive any funding. We count on donations, sponsorships, grants, and fundraisers to raise the needed funds. Do not see anything you like and would like to help us reach our goal during Shore Gives More Giving Tuesday. Just click the link to donate: https://www.shoregivesmore.org/WSWDelmarva.
