MUMC Budget 2023

Our Finance Team has worked hard to create a budget. We are grateful for the 13% increase in our giving, but the increase in many services, especially our natural gas bill, has once again left us with a budget where our expenses outmatch our expected income. We are acting on faith that the funds we need will be provided.

Thank you for your faithful giving

Dear Friends,

In the scripture read during last Sunday’s worship service, Jesus taught his listeners, “You are the salt of the earth.” (Matthew 5: 13)  This Sunday, you will hear that the “salt of the earth” can taste a lot like peanut butter! Dr. Mark(or Mardi) Manary, founders of “Project Peanut Butter,” will share their experiences with their organization’s efforts to provide nutritional and medical support primarily for children suffering from acute malnutrition in sub-Saharan Africa and beyond. You will be inspired by their work and Project Peanut Butter which has served more than one million children since 2004.

This Sunday the Maplewood UMC children will sing during worship AND after worship the Boy Scouts of Troop 362 will treat the congregation to a Pancake Brunch! This meal is free of charge and welcome to all who will come.

It will be a wonderful day to worship together, to be fed body and soul with good food and an inspiring message.

God’s grace and peace be with you,

Pastor Kim

Pastor Kim will be out of town through Wednesday, February 15. If you are in need of pastoral care, please reach out to Kathy Schmid (314-503-1101) or Rev. Lenten Small group sign up will be available this coming

Sunday. During Lent everyone is encouraged to attend worship each Sunday and take part in a small group during the week. This year some small groups will discuss the book, You Are What You Love: The Spiritual Power of Habit by James K. A. Smith.  Other groups will focus on their insights from the daily devotional, Embracing the Uncertain: 40 by Rev. Magrey R. DeVega. Samples of each of these books will be available for you to look at on Sunday.

Small groups will be offered at a variety of times during the week, including Sunday mornings, Wednesday evenings, Saturday mornings, and Tuesday evenings. Depending on the desire of the group leader and participants, some of these small groups may meet by way of Zoom. Groups will need to have at least 5 people sign up. So, check your schedules. Plan to take a moment after worship to look at the small group opportunities and sign up for the day and time that work best for you. Invite a friend to join you too!

The beginning of Lent is fast approaching.

Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, February 22. Plans for Lenten small groups are underway. Please reach out to Pastor Kim (pastorkim@maplewoodumc.org or 314-651-9999) if you are interested in serving during Lent by serving on the worship planning team, leading a small group discussion, or assisting with organizing meals ( Ash Wednesday or Maundy Thursday dinners or Easter Breakfast.)

Opportunity to serve (soup that is)

We are hoping to have a supper prior to the Ash Wednesday service on February 22 this year from about 5:30 p.m. until just before worship begins at 7 p.m. The menu is simple—soup, crackers, a few garnishes for the soup.  Are you able and willing to coordinate this meal? Can you share a pot of soup? A box of saltines? Can you come a little early and set up for the meal? Do you know now that you would like to attend? Email office@maplewoodumc.org to let us know!

MUMC Phone App

The communications committee is encouraging everyone to download the MUMC Phone app on their phone. If you need help downloading the app, there will be help available after worship and during the pancake brunch.

One of the main reasons for the app is to help have better communications among members of the church. There also is an events calendar, opportunity to give online and you can fill out a "Connect Card" to show you were at worship.

Dear Friends,

Thank you so very much for the flowers, the cards, the kind words of care and sympathy, and the prayers. A special thank you to Bob and Jan Harsh, Courtney Stotler, Renee and Tim McDonough, and Amy and Tom Cordeal, for making the trip to Paris, Illinois last weekend as we remembered and celebrated the life of Carolyn Foley—mom to Lynn Page, me, Mother-in-law to Steve Shirar, and Grandmother to Chris Shirar.  Mom was a remarkable woman. While we are so grateful for her life and trust that she is well and whole again in the presence of Jesus, we do indeed miss her. Thank you again, for all of the kindness and care.

Love in Christ, Pastor Kim

Music during Black History Month

Last Sunday we sang the closing hymn, "Beams of Heaven". Below is a bit of history about the author of this hymn:

The author of “Beams of Heaven,” Charles A. Tindley (1851-1933), was raised among slaves in Maryland. Upon moving to Philadelphia after the Civil War, Tindley became the unpaid janitor of Bainbridge Street Methodist Episcopal Church.

Keenly intelligent, Tindley educated himself in order to qualify for ordination in the AME denomination. He earned a reputation as the “prince of preachers,” eventually pastoring a mixed-race congregation in Philadelphia with more than 10,000 members. He also published 46 other hymns, of which “Nothing Between,” “Leave it There,” and “Stand By Me” are some of the best-known.

Church Musicologist C. Michael Hawn of Perkins School of Theology writes that Tindley’s hymns typically acknowledge present-day challenges but cast them as harbingers of better things coming, by God’s gracious and righteous hand. Tindley’s hymns were often worked into his sermons, which rallied and encouraged African-American emigrants from the South as they settled into northern cities after WWI.
