April Meeting Preview: SpeedCore in Practice:  Where We Started, Where We Are, and Where We’re Going

SEAW Seattle Chapter’s April Virtual Meeting

Annual Joint Meeting hosted by ASCE

Advancements in SpeedCore – from Rainier Square to 200 Park

SpeedCore, the concrete filled composite plate shear wall system, has come a long way in a brief time in structural engineering practice. Construction on the first SpeedCore system started in 2017, and as fast as the system moved from research to practice, the implementations of real-world informed improvements have been even faster. This presentation will focus on how practical experience has led to significant improvements in this novel system, how these were implemented in the latest SpeedCore building completing this year, and improvements expected to be implemented in future iterations.

Presenter:

Jeremy F. Hasselbauer, PE, SE, Magnusson Klemencic Associations (MKA)  – Jeremy is a Senior Associate who offers a broad range of experience designing mixed-use towers as tall as 80 stories and as large as 2.3 million square feet. As a member of four MKA Technical Specialist Teams - High-Rise Structures, Analysis, Wind, and Performance-Based Design - Jeremy offers an enhanced understanding of state-of-the-art design methodologies and technologies related to seismicity and wind, including the real-world implementation of supplemental damping and Composite Plate Shear Wall (SpeedCore) systems. In addition, he is a member of the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat's Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee, which aims to promote diversity in the global AEC industry.

Jeremy is the project manager leading MKA's team on the 200 Park Avenue project in San Jose, CA; just the second completed highrise building to use a SpeedCore lateral system which topped out last year and is expected to open in late 2023.

Welded Connection Design Seminar

SEAW SW Tours the APA Lab in Tacoma

By Jared Plank, SEAW SW

SEAW SW met at APA – The Engineered Wood Association’s headquarters in Tacoma, on March 16th for a presentation and lab tour. Tom Skaggs of APA started off the event with a welcome and quick introductions as well as a safety briefing. Larry Oenning, also with APA, then presented on APA’s services including technical white papers, research, and plant certification. After the presentation, the group was led to the testing laboratory by Jessie Chan, of APA, to observe some ongoing research and testing projects. Some of the items observed included: a plywood bending test, plywood adhesive bond strength testing equipment, and a large-scale floor diaphragm set up for testing. The group was able to see APA’s new strong floor and testing wall along with a glulam supported bridge crane in their new testing laboratory. The highlight of the event was when the group was able to witness a full scale OSB sheathed shear wall tested to failure.

SEAW SW thanks APA for its continued service to the engineering, manufacturing, and construction industry. The event went off without a hitch and those present were treated to some great insight and resources. APA was our host, providing food and great content as well. Thank you APA! We are also grateful to our members and guests that attended. It was a fun event and a great chance to see each other in person. We had more than 30 in attendance in addition to APA’s staff. We look forward to the next event coming soon.

Introducing the SEA NWC Steering Committee

By Angela Gottula

The NWC Steering Committee members, from L-R: Michelle Yee, Darrell Staaleson, Chun Lau, Shalini Prochazka, Scott Douglas, and Jessica Lim.

You may know that the Northwest Conference is planned for September 2023, but you may not know just how long the Steering Committee has been at work planning this event! Historically, a Northwest Conference is held every year, but as you can imagine those plans were impacted in 2020. This year is the first year since the pandemic that an in-person event will be held!

The 2023 Steering Committee was first formed back in 2019, in preparation for the 2020 event. As the SEAW Seattle Chapter is in charge of the this NWC, the committee is comprised of all Seattle members. The original Chair was Chun Lau, who was appointed by Darrell Staaleson, President of the Seattle Chapter in 2019. Chun had begun to organize the committee and joining him were Scott Douglas, Darrell Staaleson, Jim Mattison, and Katie Bohocky (Executive Director of SEAW).

Plans went on hold in 2020 and when things picked back up sometime in 2022, the committee was ready to get serious about rounding out the group. Chun was re-appointed as Chair by current Seattle Chapter President, Tyler Winkley, and then retained Scott and Darrell as committee members. Michelle Yee agreed to replace Jim, who had retired. The group approached Shalini Prochazka and Jessica Lim, who both agreed to participate. Tyler Winkley, in his role as Seattle Chapter President, serves as an ex-officio member of the committee, and Lianna Collinge, as SEAW Interim Executive Director, has taken over the administrative role.

Each individual brings a unique skillset and experience to the group. “It is actually a team effort,” Darrell Staaleson shared recently. “There are things I know and things I don't know, there are things I'm good at and things I'm not good at. This is a good group that complements each other.”

The group meets weekly on Fridays, sometimes in person and sometimes over Zoom. Meetings can be up to two hours long!

“I am very impressed with the commitment and dedication from my fellow committee members,” Chun Lau said. “We have been meeting every Friday to make sure we hold each other accountable to complete our tasks and brainstorming ideas to make sure that we have a successful conference.”

The biggest task so far has been reviewing the submitted abstracts and choosing the presentations. Darrell remarked, “When we finally hammered out the presentations and vendor presentations, we were on our way! We were over the hill! It felt really good.”

Jessica Lim, a long-time participant in the Seattle Younger Member Group, brings a youthful presence to the committee. “I am most excited about some of the talks that will be covered this year,” she says. “A theme like Innovation lends itself to some creative topics. I think the committee really tried to consider the audience and attendees when reviewing speaker applications. We wanted to make sure that the presentations and exhibits would be interesting and engaging for people.”

The committee is definitely excited about the presentations selected and some of the extra social activities that may take shape before the event.

The value of these extra events is uncontested. Some of the most memorable moments from NWC in the past are outside of the auditoriums. Scott Douglas enjoyed seeing the City Parade after the NWC in Bozeman, MT, while Darrell remembers taking a tour of a Hanford reactor in Richland, WA. Stay tuned for what the committee has planned for this year!

Thank you to this Steering Committee that is making the September NWC a reality! Please contact any of them at any time with ideas or feedback so this year’s NWC can be a terrific success!

WAsafe Refresher Training Available; WAsafe Instructors Help Wanted!

By Joyce Lem, DPRC

In May 2023, the Disaster Preparation and Response Committee plans to release the online Refresher training that’s needed to renew WAsafe enrollment. We had hoped it would be available already, but the wait will be worth it. The final revisions underway will transform the modules into a well-written, informative, and cohesive whole.

The Refresher will take approximately 3 hours to complete, including the final exam. Users will log into and out from the training platform; this allows users to break the training into multiple sessions so the class can be fit into the user’s schedule. After completing the training modules, users will need to pass a 25-question final exam that is a mix of True/False and multiple-choice.

What would you do as a Building Safety Evaluator if you saw this? (Photo is from a case study in the WAsafe training.)

For anyone whose WAsafe registrations have expired or are near expiration – check the WAsafe card to confirm that date – don’t worry. The WAsafe administrators will be generous with the renewal period. (A user’s registration needs to be renewed every 5 years.)

What is WAsafe?

WAsafe is a statewide program for volunteer Building Safety Evaluators (BSEs). WAsafe’s purpose is to assist building officials with building safety assessments following a disaster such as a major earthquake, when it is likely that building departments will be overwhelmed by the number of structures requiring review of safe occupancy.

For more details about WAsafe and the SEAW DPRC, please see the DPRC webpage: https://www.seaw.org/disaster-prep-response-committee To receive committee announcements and meeting agendas, join the DPRC email list (see the webpage). Committee meetings are held online on the third Tuesday of the month, Noon – 1pm (links given in the emailed agendas). The DPRC welcomes new members and those who just want to find out more about what we are up to.

Help wanted!  The DPRC’s most urgent need is for help with teaching WAsafe classes for newcomers to WAsafe. The WAsafe curriculum consist of 13 modules, taught over 7.5 hours. New instructors start by studying and learning one or more modules (PowerPoint), practicing the module with experienced instructors, then teaching it. The process is not too scary and great practice for anyone who considers public speaking on par with root canals. Helping teach WAsafe is a way to make an invaluable contribution to Washington state’s disaster preparedness and involves a limited time commitment.

If you have any questions about the DPRC or the WAsafe program, please feel free to contact leader Joyce Lem at joyce.seaw@wasafecoalition.org

Sustainability Presentations Cover tallyCAT, Structural Steel, SE 2050

By Chris Jeseritz

For SEAW members wanting to learn more about sustainability and embodied carbon in structural engineering, the Sustainability Committee is a great resource. In February we had Kelsey Rose Price with Building Transparency provide us with an overview of the Tally Climate Action Tool (tallyCAT) beta version. TallyCAT is a free Revit plugin that takes the building information model’s material qualities and imports them to the web-based Embodied Carbon in Construction Calculator (EC3). Within EC3, the user can refine or assign each material’s environmental impacts using the EC3 tool’s ever-growing database of environmental product declarations (EPDs). TallyCAT is a tool that will allow engineers to evaluate the climate impacts of our structural materials and allow us to work towards meaningful embodied carbon reductions.

The Watershed Building in Seattle won an IDEAS2 award from AISC and serves as an example of sustainable structural steel. Image provided by AISC.

For the month of March, David Fennell and Max Puchtel from AISC gave an informative presentation on structural steel’s sustainable attributes. The presentation highlighted structural steel’s large percentage of recycled steel content in the United States, different strategies structural engineers can implement to reduce a steel structure’s embodied carbon, and how to understand the differences between fabricated and non-fabricated steel’s EPDs. After the presentation, we had an open discussion and Q&A session that dove deeper into steel’s embodied carbon and how best to specify lower-carbon steel on projects.

In addition to outside speakers, our committee discusses new resources, news, and legislation regarding sustainability and embodied carbon as it relates to the structural engineering profession. For our April committee meeting, we will have an update on the Structural Engineers (SE) 2050 Commitment Program

If you are interested in attending the SEAW Sustainability Committee meetings, please contact Chris Jeseritz at cjeseritz@pcs-structural.com

Outreach Effort Breaks Bridges All Over Washington

By Angela Gottula, SEFW

The Structural Engineers Foundation of Washington is pleased to support several outreach efforts around the state so far this year.

SEFW was a partner to the ASCE Seattle Section Younger Member Forum who hosted its annual Popsicle Stick Bridge Competition on March 11 at the Museum of Flight. This year, 15 bridges were tested from local high schools and groups all around Puget Sound, and the winning bridge from Ingraham High School held a weight of 114 pounds!

Fourteen of the competing teams received some sort of award or recognition, including awards like Teamwork Award, Most Accurate Estimate, Most Aesthetically Pleasing, and Overall Winner. SEFW was pleased to be the sole sponsor for the prizes for the competition. As part of this sponsorship, Pete Barlow of the SEFW Board of Directors was invited to give a short presentation about SEFW, structural engineering, and his career. It was a fun event!

Just a few of the popsicle stick bridges tested at the ASCE event on March 11. SEFW was pleased to fund the prizes for the student winners. Photo by Casey Riske.

Shout-out to the SEAW Outreach Committee who staffed a booth at the Puget Sound Engineering Council’s STEM career fair, held in conjunction with the competition. Gino Mazzotti from the Outreach Committee said, “It was the first time the fair was held since 2020. The best part was seeing students, parents and industry folks engaging at the various booths. Our table had a consistent set of 3 or 4 kids participating in our Shake Table demonstration at any one time. I’d say we saw close to 200 kids come try it out.” Wow!

On the other side of the state and after a 2-year hiatus, the Mead School District is once again hosting its district-wide bridge breaking contest on April 22. SEAW members and other supporters are invited to attend the event at 10AM at Mead High School, where 100+ bridges will be tested on custom-designed breakers. SEFW is once again the sole sponsor for the prizes for the competition, which will reward three students at the elementary, middle, and high school levels.

SEFW is always looking for opportunities to support outreach in our communities. If you have ideas of ways to bring structural engineering to students, community groups, or the general public, please let us know!
