Service Learning is an integral part of our students’ Langley HS experience. It promotes civic responsibility by encouraging them to participate in meaningful service to their communities such as cleaning up a park or collecting food for a food drive. However, the benefits go much further. When students contribute to something outside their own world it builds self-esteem and can even reduce stress.
At Langley HS, during Saxon Service students come together and actively contribute to causes that are important to them. Most recently, students assembled goodie bags with notes and drawings to be distributed at SHARE, wrote letters for the military or folded origami cranes for cancer patients. Last month, over 30 blankets were assembled and delivered to the Turkish Embassy for earthquake victims.
Community service can extend beyond the school day and each week there are volunteer opportunities listed in eNews, on the PTSA Summer Opportunities webpage and in Naviance. FCPS recognizes the benefits of service learning by awarding a Service Learning Cord to wear at graduation, which students earn by completing 10 service hours per year for a total of 40 hours.
To receive community service credit students need to record their service hours in x2vol. Seniors must write their reflections and record their hours by Fri, April 24 to earn the community service cord for graduation. More information on Service Learning can be found on the Langley HS website.
The final Saxon Service will be held on Wed, Apr 12. Encourage your students to participate and help others in need!
~ Jamie H. Loving, PTSA President

Student Services needs parent volunteers to help in administering AP testing from May 1-11. You will be paired with a knowledgeable member of the Student Services team and only be tasked with assisting in handing out and collecting materials and supervising the test. Test proctoring runs about 4 hours per test, and the exams generally begin at 8 am and 12 pm.
You can see how AP tests are administered and get to know some of our student services staff better. The only rule is that you can’t proctor a test your student is taking. Sign up here.
Because of the vast amount of testing done in the building, every proctor is greatly appreciated!

speech and debate: The Langley Speech & Debate teams were busy this past Saturday doing great things! Three students competed in the VHSL State Forensics Championships and two brought home medals with top-three finishes. Junior Ashley Headrick came in 2nd place in Impromptu Speaking, senior Sebastian Ghersi came in 3rd place in Extemporaneous Speaking and junior Jiayi Wang was 5th place in Poetry.
Meanwhile, the Langley Debaters were also in competition, as five debaters advanced from Class 6 CD SuperRegionals - which includes schools in Fairfax, Arlington, and Alexandria - to the State Finals. The duo of Connor Chun and Michaela Frey (both just freshmen) and the duo of Steven Porter and Ethan Bhatia (both seniors) were undefeated in Public Forum, taking first and second places and advancing to the State Finals. In addition, sophomore Vishwa Rakasi advanced to the State Finals in Lincoln-Douglas with a fourth-place finish. This is the first time in the last 15 years that Langley has advanced multiple teams to states! Steven and Ethan had a state appearance two years ago as sophomores. The five advancing debaters will compete at the State Debate Championships on Apr 20-21 at James Madison University.
Congrats to all these students! They have been practicing relentlessly and it’s great to see their hard work pay off.

… The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration is warning the American public of a sharp increase in the trafficking of fentanyl mixed with xylazine. Xylazine, also known as “Tranq,” is a powerful sedative that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved for veterinary use. Because xylazine is not an opioid, naloxone (Narcan) does not reverse its effects. Here is more information on this dangerous drug.
