Diwali, Festival of Lights
Oct 29 - Nov 2
Diwali, one of India's most celebrated festivals, is observed on the 15th day of the Hindu luni-solar month of Kartik. This year, the main day of festivities took place on Oct. 31 and Nov 1. Often referred to as the “Festival of Lights,” Diwali spans five days and is associated with themes of happiness, wealth, prosperity, and warmth. Lighting the lamp of knowledge within us means to understand and reflect upon the significance of each theme and bring those thoughts into our daily lives. Learn more

First Generation Student Day
November 8
In 2017, The Council for Opportunity in Education (COE) and the Center for First-Generation Student Success launched the inaugural First-Generation College Celebration. Being a "first-gen" college student means being the first in your immediate family to attend and graduate from college or university. The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) estimates that 12.4% of 2021-2022 matriculants to MD-granting medical schools are first-generation college students, up from 10.8% in 2018-2019. The AAMC provides resources such as academic, professional development, emotional, and financial resources aimed to support first generation medical students. The chart below demonstrates that MUSM consistently welcomes more first generation medical students than the average medical school. Use November 8 to better understand the barriers plaguing higher education and the support necessary for this critical and resilient population to continue thriving.
