MBX AFTER SCHOOL ENRICHMENT HIGHLIGHT

Introducing Spanish Por Favor, a fun class at Manhattan Beach Preschool’s enrichment program, offered through MBX Foundation.

A native of Mexico, Señora Becky Salcedo Anzivino's primary language is Spanish. Señora Becky enthusiastically shares her knowledge and passion of her Latino roots with the niño and niñas in her MB Preschool class. Students work in a small group of amigos to focus on the basics of the Spanish language. Each class includes greetings, an introduction to a new concept, along with a review from the prior week's lesson. Art projects, games, songs, and simple class handouts wil be part of the curriculum. Learners will be having fun while absorbing basic Spanish by orally practicing their vocabulary and repetition of phrases. Basic concepts such as greetings, members of the family, feeling/emotions, food vocabulary, colors, weather phrases, body parts, Spanish traditions and history, clothing are taught.

BASKETBALL - BOYS

The Boys Basketball team is heading into the final stretch of the season, looking to finish strong in the Bay League, as CIF playoffs approach. The varsity squad is headed to Mater Dei’s Nike Extravaganza this Saturday, 1/25 at 1:30 PM at the Meruelo Athletic Center. The Mustangs will take on De La Salle, ranked in the top 5 in Nor Cal and top 20 in CA. We welcome the community to come out and support!

Senior Recognition Ceremony – Tuesday, January 28 at ~ 6:45 PM

We’ll be honoring our 8 senior players, along with the dance teams and cheerleaders, at the Senior Recognition Ceremony on Tuesday, January 28. Join us in celebrating their hard work, dedication, and contributions to the Mira Costa basketball program. Congratulations to Jack Mondello, Christian Kranz, Jacob De Armas, Bryson Bryker, McCarthy Bedner, Max Jacobs, Eneasi Piuleini, and Luke Hammerschmidt. We are so proud of you!

RUGBY - BOYS and GIRLS

ANOTHER STRONG SEASON UNDERWAY FOR COSTA RUGBY

A huge congratulations to the Boys’ JV team for their Saturday win against Valley Christian HS. Their team work and massive group effort led to a 33-0 victory over the Defenders. And it was great seeing so many parents there to cheer them on!

On Friday, the Boy’s Varsity team had a tough loss at home against the Sacramento Jesuit team. Costa fought hard, though, and held the lead until halftime, after which Jesuit came back, making the final score 25-15. Jesuit is ranked among the best high school teams in the country; Costa Varsity boys held their own, and suffered a hard but respectable loss. This is their only loss this season, with a current record of 3-1 and 6 more games left in the season. Come out and cheer at one (or all) of their home games on January 25, February 1 & 15 and March 1.

With respect to Girls’ Rugby, our A side team has showcased determination and tenacity this season, with a hard-fought 7-6 record and delivering some memorable performances on the pitch. Likewise, our B side team has demonstrated grit and perseverance, earning a balanced 5-5 record and setting the stage for a strong future in the program. Girls’ Rugby only has 2 regular tournaments left in their season, with a final 3rd championship tournament scheduled for February 8th in San Diego.

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR SENIORS

On January 18th, we honored our 7 graduating Girls’ Rugby Seniors: Kendall Herman, Kit Humbarger, Allie Lindblad, Maddie Orland, VeVe Rice, Maddy Scott and Natalie Lertsmitivanta. We look forward to honoring our 13 graduating Boys’ Rugby Seniors at the Pancake Breakfast fundraiser on January 25th: Austin Baker, Zivon Clinkscale, Brendan Jorenby, Ryan Kim, Cash Lahive, Charley McCarthy, Atticus Pines, Jack Schwartz, Zach Sniderman, Jerry Soof, Kai Succari, Cole Thomas and Lelea Tuitupou.

All of these seniors have shown amazing talent, resilience, and teamwork, all while having fun together on and off the pitch! These players have all helped to shape the legacy and leadership of this Rugby program, which continues to grow and thrive. We are incredibly proud of each of these young men and women, all of whom will be missed tremendously. We also have so much gratitude for our coaches, who are firmly committed to this program and player growth. We look forward to finishing off the season strong here at home and then traveling to New Zealand for Spring Break where our players will have an opportunity to compete internationally.

BANDS & GUARD

MCHS Parade Team marched Disneyland last Saturday, January 18, enlivening the crowd from “It’s a Small Word” to Main Street. Led by Marching Band Director d’Lainey Forrester, the parade team invites Costa students as well as rising freshmen from MBMS and Hermosa Valley to experience the thrill of marching with the 2024-25 Marching Band and Colorguard team. As it has for the last several years, Disneyland marked the joyous culmination of a hard-earned and wonderful season!

In concert band news, sophomore Iggy Im (flute/piccolo) earned selection to both All-State and All-Southern honor band ensembles for 2025. She recently traveled to the California All State Music Educators Conference (CASMEC) in Sacramento and was highlighted in piccolo features throughout a rousing Symphonic Band program. In February, she is headed to the SCSBOA conference for the second year in a row as piccolo for the All-Southern Symphonic Band.

DRAMA / TECH

Our Spring Musical, Bright Star, has begun rehearsals and will be opening Friday April 25th!

Bright Star is the heartfelt musical by Steve Martin and Edie Brickell. Set in the American South spanning the 1920s to 40s and inspired by true life events, Bright Star follows literary editor Alice Murphy as she reflects on her past and uncovers a powerful, life-altering secret. The story weaves themes of love, redemption, and resilience into an uplifting tale of hope and second chances. Bursting with spirit and emotional depth, and set to a soaring bluegrass-infused score, Bright Star celebrates the enduring power of human connection and the unbreakable bonds of family. Join Mira Costa’s award-winning drama/tech program for a performance like no other.

Tuesday, February 4th at 7pm, Drama Tech will be hosting a benefit performance where all ticket sales will go towards ASB’s Costa Cares relief for fire victims. Come support our talented Costa students while raising money for fire victims.
