NATIONAL MEDAL OF HONOR DAY
National Medal of Honor Day on March 25th recognizes all Medal of Honor recipients. The Medal of Honor is the highest military award for valor in the United States and was created in 1861.
On March 25, 1863, Secretary of War, Edwin Stanton presented the first Medals of Honor (Army) to six members of “Andrews Raiders” for their volunteering and participation during an American Civil War raid in April of 1862.
The Medal of Honor is awarded only to US military personnel by the President of the United States in the name of Congress for personal acts of valor above and beyond the call of duty.
There are three versions of the Medal of Honor; one for the Army, one for the Navy, and one for the Air Force; Personnel of the Marine Corps and the Coast Guard receive the Navy version.
Since its creation, 3,468 Medals of Honor have been awarded to the country’s soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines, and coastguardsmen.

NATIONAL LOBSTER NEWBURG DAY
National Lobster Newburg day on March 25th ushers in a celebration worthy of a sea captain. An American seafood dish, Lobster Newburg includes lobster, butter, cream, cognac, sherry, eggs, and cayenne pepper.
Delmonico’s of New York debut Lobster Newburg in 1876. A sea captain by the name of Ben Wenburg developed the elegant and rich dish. After he demonstrated the recipe to restaurant manager Charles Delmonico, Chef Charles Ranhofer made refinements and they added the creation to the restaurant’s menu as Lobster a la Wenburg. It wasn’t long before the dish grew in popularity.
However, an argument between Wenburg and manager Charles Delmonico caused the dish to be removed from the menu. After many requests from patrons, Delmonico’s returned the dish with a new name. The entree came to be known as Lobster Newburg.
When Delmonico’s first opened in 1830, Brothers Giovanni and Peter transformed a small café. They created New York’s first customary restaurant with cloth-covered tables and printed menus. Similar to the café’s transformation, Lobster Newburg came about right around the time lobster was transforming from a poor man’s food to a delicacy. You see, before the mid-1800s, people considered lobster to be fish bait or food for prisoners. Lobster hadn’t been elevated to the luxury item it is today. But right around the time Captian Wenburg invented the dish, tourism by train and ship was taking off. Pair that with improved canning options (including lobster), and people were experiencing the seafood for the first time.
As dishes like Lobster Newburg, lobster tails, lobster bisque, and others found their way onto restaurant menus, the nation’s love of the crustacean grew.

An undated enlargement from a stereograph taken by George Francois Mugnier from the collection of the University of Wisconsin. This scene depicts cotton being transported near the foot of Canal Street -- note the sugar sheds in the background.
Mugnier was active in New Orleans as a commercial photographer from 1884 until 1888 when he closed his studio at 24 Exchange Alley. This image likely dates from this period. He operated out of his home at 12 - 14 Exchange Alley, working as an assayer at the U.S. Mint to support his photographic hobby.
In 1894 he was employed by the Photo-Electric Engraving Company of New Orleans. He would later become foreman of the photoengraving department of the Times-Democrat newspaper. His photographic work may be found in numerous collections including the Louisiana State Museum, the Historic New Orleans Collection, the New Orleans Public Library, and the Louisiana State Museum Libraries Special Collections, among others.

For this Steamboat Saturday we have a trio of vessels from 1915 owned by the Bradford Transportation Company – the Dixie, the Terrebonne, and the Houma. Oddly enough, all three packets were lost within forty-five days of each other.
Not surprisingly, there were a bevy of steamboats named Dixie. Frederick Way’s directory lists at least five by that name. The vessel in this photograph was the fifth and last listed, built in Houma, Louisiana, in 1915. She plied the Upper Coast between New Orleans and Donaldsonville under R.J. Comeaux, leaving every Monday and Thursday at 6:oopm. Bookings were through L.B. Rivet. She would be sold several times until she was lost at Tamm’s Landing in September 1926.
The Terrebonne was built in Madisonville, Louisiana, in 1908 for the Bradford Transportation Company. Initially she ran between New Orleans and Bayou Teche but later changed to the New Orleans to Baton Rouge route. She too was lost in 1926 when she collided with a cargo ship near Donaldsonville.
The Houma was also built in Madisonville, completed in 1906 and destined for the New Orleans and Lower Coast routes – Bayou Lafourche, Terrebonne, and the sugar routes. She was destroyed by fire in September 1926.

River Queen Greens is back at the Thursday market! Come on by our Mid-City market and shop with Cheryl Nunes and Annie Moore, the farmers behind River Queen Greens! Since then, they have moved to a new growing site in Lower Coast Algiers on New Orleans' West Bank. Ten miles downriver from downtown New Orleans and across the street from the Mississippi River levee, their expanded location juxtaposes small-scale agriculture with global industry. ABOUT NICKEL-A-DANCE
Now in its 29th Year, NICKEL-A-DANCE is a free series of Sunday afternoon jazz concerts that began in 1994, and now take place each Spring and Fall season that is a hit with children, families, seniors and the general dancing public who don’t tend to go to night clubs. It attracts a diverse group of fans that meet on Frenchmen Street to celebrate jazz as America’s original dance music, while listening to the best of today’s classic jazz bands.
WHAT MAKES "NICKEL" SPECIAL?
A precursor to popular "swing" dancing, the style of dance that accompanies this style of traditional New Orleans jazz is now a rare happening, making the NICKEL-A-DANCE series a delicate and unique weekly gathering among a plethora of live music showcases around the Crescent City.
This season, the series features acclaimed bandleaders from musical families that go back generations in New Orleans Jazz history, over the course of four Sundays.
March 26th
Norbert Susemihl's
New Orleans All-Stars
Trumpeter, singer and drummer Norbert Susemihl has been a traveler in New Orleans music for many years, performing on international festivals and concerts. For over 4 decades he has been commuting between his second home in New Orleans, his birthplace of Hamburg, and later also Denmark.
Through the 1970s and 1980s, Susemihl made extensive connections in New Orleans with the still living legends of his music, studied their style and learned their concept of music. He has become an integral part of the New Orleans music scene, where he plays about 80 concerts yearly as soloist with the local bands.
As a bandleader, he lets his experience flow into numerous projects, building the bridge between traditional New Orleans Jazz, and the music of the new generation, developing it further stylistically. His improvisations and interpretations of the musical material display an ever present melodically approach. With his excellent musicality and dynamic authenticity, he is one of the leading trumpeters in the New Orleans Style. He has recorded and produced over 50 recordings both with his own bands and as soloist with others.

FOR THE LOVE OF COLOR!
MUSEUM NOW OFFERS ENCHROMA GLASSES FOR COLOR BLIND AUDIENCES TO EXPERIENCE COLOR
As part of our mission of accessibility and inclusion, Ogden Museum of Southern Art has partnered with EnChroma to make the colors in our artwork accessible to the color blind. Color blind guests can now borrow EnChroma glasses for color blindness at Ogden Museum for the duration of their visit.
Imagine being unable to see all the colors in a beautiful painting, a flower, a sunset, or the color of a loved one’s eyes? While people with normal color vision see over one million shades and hues, those with color vision deficiency only see up to 10% of colors. An estimated 350 million people worldwide are color blind: 1 in 12 men (8%) and 1 in 200 women (.5%). That means that over 1.9 million people in Louisiana and over 160,000 people in New Orleans are color blind and yet until now no museum in the state of Louisiana or in the city of New Orleans included accessibility options for this significant population.
Ogden Museum is proud to be the first museum in Louisiana to offer this new option for color blind guests.
Ask for Enchroma glasses at the front desk when you purchase your tickets to experience our art in full color!
Questions? Learn more about our accessibility accommodations!
Special Thanks to our Partner, EnChroma, for enabling a love of color f

This year, Audubon Louisiana Nature Center will recognize Grayhawk Perkins as a special Cultural Naturalist during Spring Into Action. Perkins is a well-known musician, performer and tribal storyteller with background in both the Choctaw and United Houma Native Nations. He recently was awarded the title of Cultural Standard Bearer for Louisiana from the Lieutenant Governor’s Office. Perkins will perform throughout the Nature Center event.
"We look forward to this event every year," said Audubon Louisiana Nature Center Director of Operations Isaac Wyatt. "Spring Into Action gives our guests a chance to explore the Nature Center, learn from our conservation partners, and connection with nature in new and exciting ways."
Guests can take part in fun opportunities to experience the natural world including hearing from a NASA Solar System Ambassador, attend a workshop hosted by Waterwise, learn about the soon-to-reopen Audubon Insectarium, and many more activities connecting guests to nature. Admission to this event is free to the public.
"When we provide opportunities to help people learn about sustainability and conservation, our surrounding communities benefit," said Deanna Rodriguez, President and CEO of Entergy New Orleans. "An important part of a clean energy future includes protecting our natural resources that exist today. That’s why we continue to partner with the Audubon Nature Institute to encourage everyone to help take care of our environment."
Through a partnership with the City of New Orleans, Entergy New Orleans has placed free to use public electric vehicle charging stations throughout the city. Several electric vehicles will be on display at Spring Into Action, Entergy representatives will be on site to talk about the vehicles and how they can make a difference in the community and can help the city reach its clean energy goals. Audubon Zoo has two free electric vehicle charging stations, and two additional chargers are located on The Fly along the riverfront near the zoo.
Spring Into Action is the first of a three-part Party for the Planet series. Other special events include:
Endangered Species Day May 20 at Audubon Zoo
World Oceans Day June 8
This series is supported by Entergy’s Environmental Initiatives Fund, which directs $1 million annually to environmental improvement projects. Party for the Planet is part of Entergy’s recognition of the 53rd anniversary of Earth Day.

Hotel Hope to Celebrate Fifth Anniversary with Inaugural “Hope Fest”
Hotel Hope, the New Orleans nonprofit serving women with children experiencing homelessness, is preparing to celebrate five years of impact at the inaugural “Hope Fest” presented by Teamsters Local 270.
Hosted by Zony Mash Beer Project, Hope Fest will take place on Saturday, April 1, from 7-10pm. The event will feature live music from the legendary Irma Thomas, Queen of New Orleans Soul, as well as Zony Mash beer and spiked seltzers, and food from local restaurants. A silent auction will also be held.
“We are so proud and excited to celebrate our success with the community and raise funds to help us serve more families,” said Sister Mary Lou Specha, Hotel Hope’s Executive Director. “In 2018, we realized a dream when we opened the doors to our 20-room motel. Hope Fest will help us build on all we have accomplished in partnership with more than 20 service delivery partners and 200 volunteers.”
Since opening their doors in 2018, Hotel Hope has served nearly 800 mothers and children experiencing homelessness, moving these families from their immediate housing crisis to a welcoming, safe, and private space where they can connect to critical supports and begin the process of transitioning back to permanent long-term housing.
Limited parking with security will be available at the event. Guests are encouraged to use rideshare services.
To purchase tickets, become a Hope Fest sponsor, or donate a silent auction item, please visit www.hotelhope.org/hopefest.
