Remediation of Hazardous Fir Tree in Park Ridge Subdivision

The Town of Qualicum has identified the risk of base and root failure in a decaying old-growth Douglas Fir Tree located in the Park Ridge subdivision and will take remedial action by removing the hazardous tree on April 17, 2023.

The work is expected to take the entire day, and Town staff have notified affected property owners. The tree removal will be carried out by a certified arborist with the use of a large crane. The west end of Park Ridge Place will be closed, and the northeast side will be single lane to facilitate the removal. The Town appreciates the cooperation of affected property owners and apologizes for any inconvenience this may cause.

The Town considers the removal of trees very carefully, and “Tree Protection Bylaw No. 725, 2023” allows that if a tree has “defects sufficient to significantly increase the likelihood that all or part of the tree will fall resulting in a risk of personal injury or property”, the hazardous tree may be cut or removed. The Fir tree is identified as a protected tree under Schedule B7 of the Town’s Tree Protection Bylaw No. 559.02, 2004”.

As required, a report from the Town’s certified arborist recommends the removal of this tree, based on coring samples that show extensive decay. The Town is taking remedial action to eliminate this hazard risk for the safety of the community.

The intent is that the tree, measuring approximately 200 feet, will be cut to 50 feet to act as a wildlife tree for birds and animals.
