History Day and Celebration of

Blessed Henry Beard Delany

April 15, 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. | St. Luke's, Salisbury

This year’s History Day is taking place April 15. Co-sponsored by the diocesan office of Black ministries and history & archives committee, the event will be hosted by St. Luke’s, Salisbury. This site is especially fitting because the election of the Rt. Rev. Henry Beard Delany took place at St. Luke’s during the 1918 diocesan convention. Diocesan historiographer, the Rev. Dr. Brooks Graebner, will highlight the significance of Delany’s election in the context of the Church’s 40-year debate over how best to provide bishops for Black congregations in the South. Attendees will then celebrate Bishop Delany’s feast day with a festive Eucharist, where the Rev. Kathy Walker, canon missioner for Black ministries, will preach.

After lunch, the Rev. Robert Black, rector of St. Luke’s, will describe his parish’s considerable recent efforts to address their local racial history, followed by the opportunity to tour St. Luke’s, the nearby city cemetery for enslaved people, and the lynching memorial recently erected by the Equal Justice Initiative. Attendees also will be encouraged to see other sites of historic interest, including the former site of St. Philip’s Episcopal Church, the historically Black congregation in Salisbury, and St. Andrew’s, Woodleaf, one of our diocesan historic properties.

Registration is required, and those wishing to partake in lunch will be asked to pay a $15 registration fee to help defray the costs of the meal.

We hope to see you there!

Diocese Announces Joy Shillingsburg as New Mission Strategy Coordinator

The Diocese of North Carolina announces today that Joy Shillingsburg has accepted the position of diocesan mission strategy coordinator.

Shillingsburg comes to the position from St. John’s, Wake Forest, where she has served as the director of youth and outreach for more than a decade. Prior to serving at St. John’s, she spent 15 years as a classroom history teacher outside of Philadelphia and in the Wake County Public School System. Her commitment to teaching historical truths and how these truths have the power to liberate and transform our lives and society has been a through line of her work.

“Joy brings to this new position deep experience in project management and motivational leadership,” said the Rt. Rev. Sam Rodman, bishop of the Diocese of North Carolina. “She has a proven ability to connect the Church and the community outside its walls, and we are excited to see the connections she’ll help make possible on our journey to Becoming Beloved Community.”

HUGS Camp Need Buddy Campers!

July 10-15 | Haw River State Park

HUGS is a unique camp for unique people, bringing together young people of diverse abilities. They overcome barriers of real and imagined differences and build bridges of understanding. HUGS is about acknowledging the good creation in each of us and more fully knowing and loving our God through it. The great differences among campers and staff help all of us learn to appreciate and celebrate our diversity as we recognize our common ground.

Now, HUGS needs help. More than 50 campers have applied, and, in order for camp to happen, HUGS needs buddy campers (formerly helper campers) and staff to sign up for a truly life-changing week. Rising high school freshmen through seniors are eligible to apply as buddy campers, and rising college freshmen and older can apply as staff.

Spaces Still Available for this Weekend's "Introduction to Dismantling Racism"

March 24-25 via Zoom

The next offering of "Introduction to Dismantling Racism" is taking place March 24-25. The interactive workshop is designed to deepen our spiritual commitment to dismantle racism as participants in the Jesus movement.

Through presentations, prayer, story sharing, videos, and small group discussion, we will explore how the sin of racism impacts all of our lives. We will ground our work together biblically and sacramentally by renewing our Baptismal vows—to seek and serve Christ in all persons and to respect the dignity of all human beings.

The Diocese is undertaking the facilitation of a new network of support, of churches helping churches. The pilot iteration is focusing on helping churches that need assistance with the completion of annual audit reports, a canonical requirement of every diocesan parish, mission and institution. Needed for the network are individuals with relevant qualifications or previous experience with completing the audit report process, using either the long or short form. The invitation is open to those who have served in a church officer or staff capacity as well parishioners who may be called to share their gifts.

Specifically needed:

  • Certified Public Accountants
  • Bookkeepers, especially those familiar with church accounting
  • Former vestry members with experience in the audit reporting process
  • Others involved with the completion of church audit reports (such as treasurers)

This is a wonderful opportunity to see how we can help each other, how churches can help churches. Please see the full announcement for more information or to complete an interest form, either to serve in the network or to request support as a church.
