2022 FRIENDS VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR
|
Each year at our annual meeting, the Friends of Shorewood Public Library honor a volunteer of the year. This year we were especially pleased to recognize the people who work behind the scenes, the people who keep the library shelves in pristine order: the thirty-five Adopt-A-Shelf volunteers. As a group, Adopt-A-Shelf volunteers put in over 125 hours per year.
Three Adopt-A-Shelf volunteers were present to receive the nameplate naming them Volunteers of the Year. Pictured are Volunteer Helen Lambron, Friends Vice President Joan Spector, Volunteer Michael Briselli, Library Director Jen Gerber, and Volunteer Mary Armstrong. In addition, the following individuals were honored: Mary Belvoir, Kathy Bond, Shana Broderick, Matt Campion, Dennis Deaton, Janice Ereth, Landa Evers, Jane Frederick, Laurie Glass, Lois Grosse, Ellen Guiseppi, Susan Inbusch, Shantha Jhansale, Mary Johnson, Mary Jorgensen, Jackie Keltner, Therese Klein, Cathy Lathrop, Desirae LeMay, Pat Lunn, Pat Maier, Elizabeth Matz, Sara Miller, Sharadha Naraj, Katie O’Brien, Beverly Scott, Sally Scott, Catherine Startt, Gina Szablewski, Melissa Talbott, Tiffany M. We truly appreciate the time and effort these volunteers devote to the most beloved place in Shorewood: its library!

WINTER READING BOOK REVIEWS
|
|
I thought this was overall a good book. There were a lot of characters, so I was a little confused here and there. I didn’t think the ending was going to go the way it did. I enjoyed reading through the story with a different narrator each chapter, it gave interesting insight. Parenting in all of the varying generations was very apparent in this book. I read it fast to find out what was going to happen next. I will say that I didn’t like how the last part of the book was set in COVID-19 pandemic times. I read a book to get away from everyday life, so I didn’t like that they tried to pull the craziness of real life into the mystery of the book.

Told in two narratives, Exalted is as much of a California novel as anything Joan Didion wrote. Emily is a listless millennial who creates astrology charts online and experiences transactional relationships with sex workers and rich kids. Dawn is an almost-40 lesbian with rage issues and borderline personality disorder. Their narratives abruptly collide in the last quarter of the book. The conclusion isn’t so much a “meet cute” as it is watching a slow-motion train wreck.
Very dark and taut writing, the characters are almost funny but never quite. The nihilism will linger with you for a little while.

I was hesitant about this book because it follows a woman's experience early in the COVID-19 pandemic and thought it might be depressing, but it was a gem and I really enjoyed it. Lucy by the Sea is about an author named Lucy Barton that leaves NYC for Maine. I really enjoyed getting to know her. I liked the author's writing style because I felt like I was right there with Lucy and loved hearing about her outlook on her family and everything and everyone around her. Surprisingly, it was kind of healing to revisit some of the emotions and experiences in the book because they are apparently pretty universal and I didn't dare think too much about them at the time.
