Assistant Principal

We are always striving to reinforce positive student behaviors here at UPark. One of the main ways we support this is through our Wise Owl Traits. We have five character traits that we focus on throughout the year; cooperation, responsibility, caring, respect and joy! We focus on these traits in all areas of the school from the classroom, to the lunchroom to the playground. If an adult sees a student displaying one of these traits, they may give students an owl ticket! You may have heard about these at home or seen one brought home with your student. On Fridays, teachers choose two owl ticket winners from their classrooms to come down to have their picture taken with me and Mr. Atonna, which can be seen in the parent newsletter. They are then able to choose a pencil or a UPark bracelet!

Five times a year, we have Wise Owl Assemblies to support our students that go above and beyond showing these owl traits in their classrooms and around the school. During these assemblies, students receive a Wise Owl Award with a t-shirt, certificate and have their picture taken with Mr. Atonna. Over the course of their time here at UPark, we hope that each owl will receive a Wise Owl award and as a school we have a system for tracking students that receive this award.

We hope that you will continue to reinforce these Owl traits at home and celebrate your students when they come home with an owl ticket or owl award!

ICYMI - Apple Campaign Matching Opportunity

In case you missed it last week, we made the announcement that four families* have stepped forward to donate $20,000 total if we can raise $20,000 from the rest of the UPARK community. This is a limited time matching opportunity, so if you haven’t donated yet, now is the time to ensure your dollars stretch even further.

It’s important to remember that every child at this school is impacted positively from the annual grant the PTA makes from the money raised from the Apple Campaign. If it weren’t for the Apple Campaign, we wouldn’t be able to fund full time art classes, reading intervention and paraprofessionals in younger classrooms.

Every donation size counts and there are many ways to donate:

  1. Go to http://bit.ly/apple-upark to donate via CheddarUp
  2. Send a Venmo @uparkpta
  3. Mail or drop off a check at the front office Attn: PTA Apple Campaign
  4. Make a stock transfer (just email uparkpta@gmail.com to find out how)

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to email uparkpta@gmail.com

*A very special thank you to the Nielsen ($5k), Stallworthy ($5k), Trujillo ($5k), and Winn ($5k) families for supporting this matching effort

Restaurant Night Tonight!!

On October 25 and 26th, from noon-8pm, Taziki's Hampden will be donating a portion of sales back to our school. For dine-in or phone orders, please mention our school name. For online orders, please use promo code UPARK.

Taziki's will be donating a minimum of 15% of all UPark sales. If we hit 20 or more orders, they'll donate 20% of all sales. Anybody up for a challenge of lunch and dinner there, two days in a row?!?

One of the scariest things about Halloween is ALL THE PLASTIC!

Each year, more than 600 million pounds of candy are purchased for Halloween in the United States alone and most of it is wrapped in tiny plastic wrappers. The UPark Green Team is excited to announce that we will be doing a candy wrapper recycling program with Rubicon again this year to help address this plastic problem. Please bring your CLEAN AND EMPTY candy wrappers to be recycled at school in our Rubicon Trash or Treasure Wrapper Recycling Box.

With Rubicon’s Trash or Treasure recycling program, the plastic is melted off the wrappers and made into pellets to be made into new things. Watch how here!

Please bring your clean and empty wrappers to school for recycling between Wednesday, November 1st and Friday, November 10th.

Fall Grounds Beautification Day!

With the leaves changing color and starting to fall, it is time to turn to raking. Please join us Saturday, November 11th from 9:00am to 12:00pm (drop in or stay as long as you want) to clean up the UPARK grounds! We will rake leaves, pick up trash, weed, and do general cleanup. Students are encouraged to come along and lend any assistance that they are willing to provide. We are also looking for anyone with a pickup or trailer to volunteer to haul leaves to the compost site.

We will be borrowing some supplies from the School District, but supplies are limited this time of year, so some things that you may want to bring if you have available:

  • work gloves
  • rakes or leaf blowers (note electric ones can be difficult accessing power near where the leaves are)
  • leaf bags - you can obtain a pack of these free from ACE with a coupon. Get Your Coupon Here!
  • Trucks or trailers to haul leaves to the Veteran's Park leaf drop (only 1.5 miles away)

Please reach out to the PTA Grounds Chair Andy Yara-Zelenski at yaraski@gmail.com with any questions.

Harvest Hero Celebration and Parade

We are excited to once again host our all inclusive Fall Harvest Hero Celebration and Parade on Tuesday, October 31st! Students are encouraged to wear costumes of their favorite heroes; think book characters, first responders, athletes, parents and grandparents, etc. We will start the day with a parade around the track and playground at 9:00am. Families are welcome to stay after drop off to watch the parade. Absolutely no scary costumes or weapons are allowed.

In order to keep this day as normal as possible we will not be having classroom parties. We ask that students have their regular school clothes under their costumes to change into after the parade. As a reminder, we are not celebrating Halloween, as we know that not all of our families celebrate and therefore can't participate. We want to ensure all of our Owls are able to participate in a fun dress up day in October. PTA will also have a supply of capes and masks for students that may not have a costume, but want one.

Fall Book Fair- November 6th-10th

The ever popular Book Fair is back! For the Fall Book Fair, the Library will be open before and after school from 8:00am-8:50am and 3:50pm-5:30pm daily on the week of November 6th-10th with extended hours during Multicultural night on Thursday, November 9th.

If you are not able to shop with your student before or after school, students may shop with e-wallets, cash, check, or credit card during the school day. Please notify your teacher if you would like your student to shop during school hours.

UPark Owl Ticket Students

Congratulations to this week's Owl Ticket students! They were recognized by their teachers for above and beyond positive behavior.

Owl Tickets are given to students for going above and beyond in one of our five core values: caring, cooperation, responsibility, respect and joy. Owl Tickets focus on the school's trait of the month, give students a chance to participate in the weekly "Owl Tickets" photo and will be posted on the "UPARK" letters in our main hallway.
