Nicole Ruelas’ journey with PESA as a MSW intern began with a unique blend of passion, experience, and serendipity. Having spent 27 years working in the field of special education, Nicole decided to embark on a new path later in life by returning to school. A criminology and justice major at California State University, Northridge (CSUN), she was introduced to PESA through her professor, who immediately recognized her talent for connecting with system-impacted youth and navigating complex systems.
Initially, Nicole’s role at PESA involved supporting special education self-advocacy workshops. However, as her dedication and enthusiasm became evident, she was quickly invited to support the Los Angeles Superior Court Teen Court program. Reflecting on her early experiences, Nicole shared, “I’ve been working in high schools for so long, so it came naturally. I love hearing the perspectives of the student jurors and seeing how they engage with the justice process.”
Her involvement expanded as she took on case management roles and participated in outreach events. Nicole cherishes these opportunities, stating, “Working directly with families and youth allowed me to better understand their needs and how to help them find a path forward.” Her efforts, both in and out of Teen Court sessions, have had a tangible impact, fostering trust and offering hope to those she serves.
Beyond her work, Nicole’s dedication shone at a recent YMCA dinner, where she epitomized determination. Despite juggling multiple commitments—including a Teen Court session earlier that day—she managed to attend the event. To her surprise, Nicole won the grand prize, a brand-new 2024 Toyota Corolla. Recalling the moment, she said, “It felt so unreal. I was just happy to be there, and then suddenly, they called my name. Seeing the joy from my colleagues made it even more special.”
Nicole’s experience at PESA has been transformative, not just for her but for the countless individuals she’s impacted. “PESA gave me the platform to bring my life’s experience into new spaces,” she explained. Whether mentoring youth, connecting with families, or collaborating with her peers, Nicole’s story is a testament to the power of compassion and persistence.
Her journey with PESA exemplifies the organization’s mission of empowering individuals and making meaningful change. Nicole’s ability to adapt, connect, and inspire continues to leave an indelible mark on the community she serves, embodying the very spirit of PESA.
