Adjunct Spotlight: Chef Andrea Miller Parkinson

School of Business & Industrial Trades

At Reynolds, I believe the most impactful learning occurs when students feel genuinely supported, both in and out of the classroom. In the hospitality department, we are fortunate to have multiple classes with the same students, which allows us to build deeper connections. Fostering these connections enriches the learning experience for both students and faculty alike. Maintaining an open, empathetic relationship with my students helps create a sense of trust and belonging. This not only fosters a positive learning environment but also empowers students to take ownership of their educational journey.

For me, teaching is a two-way street: when students feel seen and valued, it enriches their learning experience, while also helping me grow as an educator.

By maintaining supportive relationships beyond the classroom, I’ve had the privilege of visiting students at their workplaces and seeing them thrive in real-world settings. It fills me with pride when I hear from their employers about the positive impact they are making in their teams. These relationships not only motivate students to excel but also give us as educators a sense of fulfillment in knowing that we are contributing to their success, both academically and professionally. Supporting students beyond academics enables us to build connections that inspire confidence and encourage them to reach their full potential.

Chef Andrea Miller Parkinson is a breath of fresh air for our students. Her extensive educational and work experience background translates seamlessly into the classroom. A topic that causes joy for some, but severe angst for others, as she has the challenge to balance her passion by teaching Pastry Arts major students, often with a mix of Culinary Arts major students. Both sets of students commend her teaching style and patience while they perfect scientific formulas to turn out correctly. As a student quoted, “she cares so very much about the quality of the education she gives each student.”

Students know her in and outside of class, but as Department Chair, I am able to observe the countless hours she puts into planning for her course and hours after class ends, spending time in the lab tasting and assessing product to provide ample feedback for students to hold onto or those ever-important tips for improvement. She is grateful, kind, talented and an amazing part of our team! Without her and many others, the skills we provide to students in this career path would go unrealized and missing our mission to provide a world-class education that translates to career opportunities for their future.

Teaching Tactics: Student Questions

"How to handle your students' questions like a boss!"(SwingLiteracy.com)

Do your students pester you with questions? Do you wish they would ask more questions. Do you wish you could always find the right answer to give them? Do they distract each other and then ask about something you just said? How a teacher handles students' questions proves their credibility, their maturity, their empathy, and their trustworthiness.

Equity Reading Group Seats Still Available!

Promoting Belong book cover

"Promoting Belonging, Growth Mindset, and Resilience to Foster Student Success"

by Amy Baldwin, Bryce D. Bunting, Doug Daugherty, Latoya Lewis, & Tim Steenbergh

In recent years, growth mindset, resilience, and belonging have become popular topics for research and practice among college educators. The authors of this new volume deepen the conversation around these noncognitive factors that significantly impact student success. Along with offering support for the development of learning mindsets, this book contains strategies for faculty and staff to consider as they create initiatives, programs, and assessments for use in and outside the classroom.

There are still spots available in this semester's Equity Reading Group. CETL's Equity Reading Group is a faculty-led initiative where participants read books together throughout the semester to discuss strategies to cultivate inclusive and equitable approaches to teaching and improving student learning and success.

Dr. Jennifer Hitchcock is leading this fall semester's sessions. Upcoming meetings will be held in Zoom on October 17, November 7, and December 5. If you have any questions or would like to participate, please email Jennifer Hitchcock to receive a copy of the book (supplies limited) and the links to participate in the Zoom sessions.
