Luncheon Lecture: Americans and the Holocaust

The Petoskey District Library will present a traveling exhibit, “Americans and the Holocaust,” in January and February 2023. The exhibit examines Americans’ responses to Nazism, war and genocide in Europe during the 1930s and 1940s. In conjunction with the exhibit, North Central Professor Charles McCaffrey will give a talk at the library entitled, “Henry Morgenthau: The Treasury Secretary Who Forced America to Aid the Jews of Europe.” He will reprise his talk for our Luncheon Lecture audience. GLCO presents Shackleton's Incredible Voyage

Shackleton’s Incredible Journey is GLCO’s 2023 “Legends & Mysteries” educational concert, focusing on the leadership of Ernest Shackleton, one of the principal figures in the age of Antarctic exploration. In this true survival story from 1915-1916, Shackleton leads the men of the Endurance voyage through almost two years of shipwreck (crushed by ice), camping on ice, and an incredibly perilous rescue mission, to survive against all odds. Audiences are given an immersive musical experience as they watch the story unfold through live theater and original voyage film footage, with the GLCO orchestra performing exhilarating 20th century orchestral masterpieces representing the qualities of Shackleton’s leadership, including a sense of purpose, loyalty, optimism, ingenuity, and responsibility. There are now more places in northwest Michigan to donate blood. HDNW is now hosting drives in each of our four counties: Antrim, Charlevoix, Emmet, and Otsego. Vertsiti Blood Center of Michigan announced Jan. 10 that it went to “appeal” status, which alerts partners to an emergent need to increase donor collections for area hospitals.
Consider registering or walking into one of the following drives at our Charlevoix, Mancelona, Gaylord, and Harbor Springs/Petoskey locations. We appreciate your willingness to give back to our community in yet another way.

Traverse City Central High School Students Defend the Potential of Children
 
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwestern Michigan (Bigs) received a $206 donation from the Traverse City Central High School Marketing Class led by Becky Harvey. Since the beginning of the 2022/23 school year 29 students in the class have been learning how to create a business and make a profit choosing Bigs as the honored recipient of funds generated to support Bigs’ Mentoring Programs. 
 
“It gives students real-life experience of problem-solving, communicating, working together in a team, figuring things out and ultimately paying it forward to a non-profit in our community,” Becky Harvey said.

Candlelight Hikes

The Charlevoix Recreation Department host Candlelight Hikes every Friday through February on the trails of Mt. McSauba. This one mile hike offers residents and visitors to the area a unique opportunity to hike trails under the glow of luminary bags.

2022 Red Kettle Campaign Results

Due to the kindness, compassion and generosity of our local community, The Salvation Army nearly reached it’s 2022 Red Kettle Campaign goal of $145,000. Considering the challenging season with a shortage of bell-ringers and a blizzard over the last 2 highest revenue producing days, David Meyer, the 2022 Red Kettle Campaign Chairman did a tremendous job getting the word out and inspiring others to join forces and raise money for those in need.

Pet of The Week - Mortica!

Say hello to Morticia! This adorable girl came to us with her two brothers as a transfer from another shelter. Morticia is a very shy girl and will take some time getting comfortable in a new home, but give her some toys and she will be as happy as can be. Once Morticia has settled in we are sure that she will be the most loyal dog you'll ever have. Being a puppy still, Morticia will need some basic training. Please keep in mind that all puppies adopted under 9 months will be required to take puppy behavioral classes.


4Front Credit Union Announces Strategic Acquisition of Old Mission Bank

4Front Credit Union and Old Mission Bank announce that the two organizations have signed a definitive purchase and assumption agreement for 4Front Credit Union to acquire the assets and assume the liabilities of Old Mission Bank, including Old Mission's branches in Sault Ste. Marie and Pickford, Michigan.

The board directors from both institutions have unanimously approved the transaction. It is expected to close in late 2023, subject to customary closing conditions, the approval of Old Mission Bank’s holding company (Old Mission Bancorp Inc) stockholders, and regulatory approvals. The transaction would grow 4Front Credit Union’s assets to nearly $1.2 billion and 20 branches.

Upon completion of the transaction, the Sault Ste. Marie and Pickford locations will operate as “Old Mission, a Division of 4Front Credit Union,” according to 4Front Credit Union CEO, Andy Kempf. 4Front Credit Union will operate the two current branches and retain Old Mission Bank’s employees to continue serving its customers with expanded services. Old Mission Bank customers will become members of 4Front Credit Union with full access to 4Front Credit Union’s vast array of products and services.

Employers, schools, and volunteers from throughout Northwest Lower Michigan can now sign up for the region’s largest career exploration event for students. MiCareerQuest™ Northwest will be held in-person May 11, 2023, at the Grand Traverse County Civic Center in Traverse City.
 
MiCareerQuest™ Northwest is a hands-on, career and college readiness event for 9th-grade students. Local employers from agriculture, construction, healthcare, hospitality, human services, IT, manufacturing, and more will come together to create a unique career exploration experience. 2000 students will find out what it’s really like to be a nurse, machinist, computer programmer, chef, veterinarian, and more, directly from the people who do these jobs every day.
 
At MiCareerQuest™ Northwest, students will be able to:
  • Talk one-on-one with experts from the region’s high-demand industries
  • Touch, feel and work with tools and technology of the trades
  • Walk away with in-depth and practical knowledge of today’s workplaces

Chain of Lakes Relay For Life is Partnering with The Blue Pelican Inn to bring Bubbles and Bowties Adult Prom

Looking for a way to break up the long winter now that the holidays are over? Join us at the Blue Pelican in Central Lake on Saturday, February 11 for the Bubbles and Bowties Adult Prom. We will have food and beverages from 7p-9p along with a silent auction and photo booth to get your prom pictures taken. At 9pm we will begin dancing. Not a dancer? That’s okay. We will also have various games and activities throughout the night to keep everyone entertained. There will be a champagne toast at midnight.

Pre-sale tickets will be $50 for an individual ($35 going to Relay For Life) and $75 for a couple ($45 going to Relay For Life). Tickets will be available from Relay For Life committee members or The Blue Pelican, Pelican’s Nest, Adams Madams, Merrie's Market, Bellaire/Central Lake or Alden Hardwares. Tickets are cash only please. Tickets will be available at the door for $55. per person.

February 18: Slavery by Another Name - A documentary that recounts the many ways in which American slavery persisted as a practice many decades after its supposed abolition. 
 
March 18: Freedom Riders - Renowned director Stanley Nelson chronicles the inspirational story of American civil rights activists' peaceful fight against racial segregation on buses and trains in the 1960s.

Big Brothers Big Sisters Welcomes Jennifer Krarup as Advocacy Specialist

Petoskey, MI — Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwestern Michigan (Bigs) is thrilled to welcome Jennifer Krarup to our team in Charlevoix and Emmet County. Jennifer will work in our Petoskey office filling a newly created position, Advocacy Specialist, and we ask that you please welcome her as she reaches out to the community to engage and share the wonderful impact Bigs’ mission is having on children in Emmet and Charlevoix Counties.
While Jennifer will be eagerly connecting with the community members, leaders and organizations, she is going to be working hard to generate awareness and revenue in both counties, to support more children with caring, adult mentors.
“We are elated to have Jennifer join our team. She brings a wealth of experience and is exactly what our agency needs at this time as we look to increase our presence in Emmet and Charlevoix Counties”, said Bigs’ CEO, Cecilia Chesney.  “This is only possible through the generous support and understanding of our community”, she said.
Jennifer is a long-time resident of northern Michigan and joins the team with over 20 years of customer service and sales experience, and as owner of a local events coordination business. While new to Bigs’ Mission, Jennifer and her family were involved with the Northern Michigan Foster Care system for over six years, opening their hearts and their homes as a foster family to 18 children and adoptive family to two beautiful girls.
“I have searched for a new way to positively impact the lives of youth in our great community and was inspired by the Bigs’ Mission. I am truly grateful to be a part of the Bigs’ team and excited to continue helping our youth,” said Jennifer Krarup.
