Klamath River

The Klamath River is the state's second-largest river and begins as the outflow from Upper Klamath Lake in Oregon. It flows 257 miles through Oregon into Northern California, eventually emptying into the Pacific Ocean. It includes many of the longest free-flowing stretches of river in California, including excellent stretches of whitewater. It is the most important North American river south of the Columbia River for anadromous fish in migration.

Clear Lake

The largest natural freshwater lake wholly in the state of California is Clear Lake. oddly enough the lake was not named for its water clarity but was named by settlers in the late 1800s because of the astonishingly clean air in the area. The air remains clean to this day, with the California Air Resources Board certifying Lake County as having the cleanest air in California for the last 23 years. At one time Clear Lake was even bigger than it is now and included the Blue Lakes (to the northwest of Clear Lake). Volcanic eruptions and subsequent landslides dramatically changed the l; landscape, forever separating Clear Lake from the Blue Lakes and creating the lake we know today.
