2024 Events Are Coming!

Dates Soon to be Announced

It's hard to believe, but the holidays are almost upon us and 2023 will be over before we know it!

Fall and winter time are a busy time for Outdoor Buddies, as all of the year's hard work comes to fruition and mobility impaired hunters are taken on accessible big game hunts throughout the state. This means that few events are hosted during the holiday season, giving time for hunters and helpers to get out into the field after deer, elk, and antelope.

Keep an eye out for website updates and the announcement of the 2024 event schedule. As we close out the year and plan for our upcoming events, we look forward to many more successful events and hunts to come.

It has been a great year, and Outdoor Buddies members have enjoyed hunting, fishing, and experiencing the outdoors together. As we finish out the year of hunts and begin preparing for 2024, it is time to start planning for our 2024 events!

Stay tuned for announcements and website updates to reflect the 2024 schedule.

Looking forward to another great year together!

Warriors on Cataract Updates

As of mid-September we have completed the last of our five disabled veterans’ raft trips. Three were all-female, even the guides. Two of these all female trips were in Desolation Canyon on the Green River, one in Gates of Lodore.

The May Special Operations trip was on epic big water in Cataract Canyon. We had a disabled Ukrainian soldier, Igor, on board. He is not English-literate, so we had an interpreter on board. One of the Navy SEALs on the trip described having him along as “way cool.” Igor’s daughter called back from Ukraine after Igor returned and said her father is “over the moon” regarding his experiences while hosted in the US.

We are attempting to set up email links between our Special Operations veterans and Ukrainian soldiers who are languishing in Ukrainian and Polish hospitals healing from battle wounds and amputations. We know that lifting their spirits will result in faster and better healing.

In next March we will sponsor teams in the Bataan Memorial Death March. Over 5,000 entrants are expected. This march commemorates the 81st anniversary of the Bataan Death March in the Philippines. a 26k march on the White Sands Desert. Last March, our female team won first place in the Team Civilian Female category.

We are now preparing the photo album of this year’s activities and planning and booking next year’s five raft trips.

Recipe: Antelope Stir Fry

Recipe by: Danielle Prewett

Whether your gathering is small or you need an excuse to celebrate the buck you just tagged, try this special venison recipe as your main dish. The rub has the nostalgic flavor of sage with a hint of smoke added to the salt, and the steaks basted with toasty brown butter make for a delicious finish. This dish is so damn good that it might just become a new tradition.

Ingredients

  • 4 venison loin steaks
  • 3 tsp. smoked sea salt
  • 1½ tsp. plain sea salt
  • ¾ tsp. coarse ground black pepper
  • 8 to 12 fresh sage leaves
  • 1 to 2 tbsp. cooking oil
  • 4 tbsp. butter, chopped

Directions

  1. Mince four of the sage leaves and reserve the rest. Blend the salts, pepper, and minced sage together, and rub the mixture over the venison steaks. Note that you may not need all of the spice rub—reserve what you don’t use. You can do this step hours before you cook or immediately before you plan to sear.
  2. Heat a large frying pan over medium-high heat on the stovetop or use a cast iron pan over a charcoal fire. You’ll need a pan big enough to accommodate all of the steaks without overcrowding, or you’ll have to work in batches. Once the pan is hot, add a glug of oil and swirl to coat the bottom. Lay down each steak and cook for 2 to 4 minutes. The steaks should sizzle, but not fry and sputter oil. Flip the steaks when brown.
  3. Top each piece of meat with one or two sage leaves. Drop the butter into the pan and let it foam. Then tilt the pan to the side and use a spoon to scoop the melted butter and baste it over the top of each steak. The hot butter should gently fry the sage leaves and coat the venison.
  4. Repeat this process for a few minutes and start to feel the steaks for doneness. Use a meat thermometer if needed and remove the steaks at 125°F internal for rare, 130°F for medium-rare, and 135°F for medium.
  5. Transfer to a cutting board and let the steaks rest uncovered for 5 to 8 minutes. Serve with buttery mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce.

*If you prefer to cook your steaks directly on the grill, lightly coat each piece in oil after seasoning. Top with sage leaves after flipping and drizzle foaming hot butter over the tops before serving.
