What's Happening at The Literacy & Learning Center

As we reflect on the past year, we're filled with immense gratitude for your unwavering support of The Literacy & Learning Center. Your generosity has made a profound impact on the lives of countless children and adults in our community.

Throughout the year, our dedicated team — including volunteers, teachers, tutors, staff, and board members — has worked tirelessly to provide high-quality, free educational programs that empower individuals of all ages. We've witnessed remarkable growth and success in our programs, including the successful launch of our new Pre-K program. This achievement would not have been possible without your generous support.

We were so honored to receive this thank you card (pictured above and text below) that we wanted to share it in its entirety. Such kind words need nothing to be added.

Hello!

Adding to Sawyer’s thank you, I wanted to send my gratitude as well for sharing this wonderful book with us! We recently relocated from Crested Butte, CO, to Dahlonega, GA, while my husband is working on a project for UNG. We visited your charming town on Halloween to trick or treat, and I literally had happy years when y’all offered him a book.

Maddie Selness, a third-grader, has shown remarkable generosity towards The Literacy & Learning Center. Maddie, who attended Kindergarten at Rabun Gap with TL&LC's Pre-K Director, Carolyn Middlebrooks, recently visited the center with her family.

Inspired by her connection to TL&LC and her love for her former teacher, Maddie donated some of her savings to support the organization's mission. Her family, including her sister Emory, joined her in this act of kindness, with an additional contribution.

TL&LC is incredibly grateful for Maddie and her family's generous donation. Their support will directly benefit the children and families in our community.

The Literacy & Learning Center brought holiday cheer to the streets of Highlands as staff, board members, volunteers, and students participated in the annual holiday parade. The TL&LC float, adorned with festive decorations, was filled with children from the after-school and pre-K programs. As the float went down Main Street, staff and volunteers walked alongside, distributing books to children lining the parade route.

As the year winds down, our after-school students celebrated the holidays with a special treat. Each student received a Play-Doh set, a fidget toy, and a personalized holiday ornament. These small tokens of appreciation were a fun way to end the year and spread some holiday cheer. We wish all our students a safe and happy winter break!

TL&LC's Volunteer and Student Highlights

To celebrate their hard work and positive impact, the TL&LC after-school program regularly recognizes exceptional students and volunteers.

Volunteer Spotlight: Bee Gleeson

Bee Gleeson has been a shining star in our after-school program. Her positive energy and infectious enthusiasm make her a beloved volunteer among the students. Kids look forward to her visits, knowing they'll be met with a warm smile and engaging activities. Bee's unwavering dedication to fostering learning and creating a fun environment is truly inspiring.

Student Spotlight: Ruby

Staff are thrilled to highlight Ruby, a remarkable student who consistently goes above and beyond. Ruby's leadership qualities, which have a positive impact on her peers, are a testament to her character. Her positive attitude and eagerness to learn make her an invaluable community member.

We are currently seeking a highly motivated and experienced GED (General Education Development) Teacher to join our team. The ideal candidate will have a passion for adult education, a strong background in GED instruction, and the ability to create an inclusive and supportive learning environment.

This new in-person course will be offered once a week for three months with the opportunity to teach additional GED courses based on performance and program needs.

To celebrate the end of the year, each student received a special gift bag filled with books, a warm hand-knitted hat to keep them cozy, a personalized ornament, Play-Doh for creative fun, a Poppit for sensory play, and some delicious candy. We wish all our students a joyous

and safe winter break!

  • Report cards went home in the last week of class.
  • Students will start writing their class book in January, and it will be published in March, and an author party will follow. Each student will be given one book copy, and parents can order additional copies.
  • The first day back to school after the holidays will be January 7
  • We will begin our reading logs the week of January 13. The parents will write in the log nightly about what they read to their kids and how long they spent reading.

TL&LC is pleased to offer a nurturing and comprehensive learning environment for children needing pre-K education. Through a play-based and child-centered approach, young learners will engage in activities that enhance their language and literacy skills, develop mathematical and scientific thinking, nurture social-emotional well-being, and promote physical growth.

Pre-enrollment applications are being accepted on a rolling basis. To ensure your child's spot in our free pre-K program, apply now.

Reminder: TL&LC has extended the age limit for pre-K! We are now accepting students who will turn 4 by January 2025!
