Reflection from our Co-Pastor January 22, 2023

January 18-25 is The International Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, which has been celebrated for over 100 years. By annually observing this week of prayer, Christians move toward the fulfillment of Jesus' prayer at the Last Supper "that they all may be one."  (John 17:21)

Our Regional Bishop Kae Madden tells us, “It is right and good to take time out of the busy-ness of our lives to affirm with deep joy and a sense of wonder the gifts of the Ecumenical Catholic Communion. In this Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, we orient this time around our middle name, Ecumenical, and pray for our relationships with our sister Christian churches.”

Our 301 Faith Partnership with our sister Christian churches of St Paul’s Episcopal and Trinity Lutheran, is living out a model of Christian Unity in our midst. As we spend time in prayer and reflection, it would be good to re-acquaint ourselves with the Covenant bonding our three communities, and to celebrate our unity as we enter our 5th year together.

As three separate and unique congregations, but one faith community, we covenant with each other:

1.       We covenant to LOVE-- to love God, Self, and our Partners in Ministry as we Love Our Self--seeking together God's will for our partnership.

2.      We covenant to COMMUNICATE--To be open, honest, and more effective in communication among our three congregations; to communicate the decisions and work of our faith partnership To all three congregations; to respect each congregation to retain its own unique historical character, governance, and polity, as each continues to manage its own finances even as we share expenses.

3.      We covenant to WORK TOGETHER in all volunteer areas--to help share the responsibility and care of our common spaces including sanctuary, kitchen, narthex, fellowship hall, and sacristy. we will continue to work together across ministry teams such as Faith Formation, Social Eco Justice, Music and Property, While promising to find other ways to faithfully engage in ministry together.

4.      We covenant to SHARE monthly Operations and Maintenance expenses-- to reassess each congregations contribution, based on need and ability, to the shared expenses of operating and maintaining the church and its ministries. We share together the information of finances, to better contribute to the shared expense of ministry.

5.      We covenant to INVITE one another into any capital expense-- to consider, create, and fund capital projects (expenses outside normal monthly operation and maintenance) for use by all three congregations.

This is the covenant we have vowed to uphold for our three faith communities.

So, in this week of Prayer for Christian Unity, let us join together to pray…

Awakener, expand our vision that we might see the mission we share with all of our Christian cousins, to show forth the justice and loving kindness of your kin-dom. Help us to welcome our neighbors as your Son welcomes us. Help us to be more generous as we witness to the grace that you freely give us. May we grow in unity. We pray… “God of life, hear our prayer.”

Unifying Love, we thank you for your unending care and love for us. Unity is your desire for your people. and you continue to bring about this unity, to make the flock whole, through the action of the Holy Spirit. Help us to sing redemption songs. Open wide our hearts to receive your love and to extend your compassion to the whole of the human family. We pray… “God of life, hear our prayer.”

Uplifting One, you call us to act out of the truth that every person is precious, that people are more important than things, and that the measure of every institutional structure in society is whether it threatens or enhances the life and dignity of each person. May we seek together the common good and well-being of all, especially the lowly and the destitute. We pray… “God of life, hear our prayer.”

Amen

Tom Moos, Chair Social Justice Ministry

Hattie McDaniel was an American actress, singer, song-writer and comedian. She was born in either 1893 or 1895 to a family of performers. Her parents, formerly-enslaved, moved the family from Kansas here to Fort Collins to a house at 317 Cherry Street in 1900 to escape the after-effects of slavery combined with relentless poverty, and repeated encounters with racism and bigotry. The family moved to Denver in 1901. Later, Hattie joined a brother and sister in California to pursue a singing and acting career.

Although she appeared in over 300 films, she received on-screen credit for only 83, often playing a maid unabashed about expressing her opinions to white folk. The NAACP criticized her during her career for appearing in stereotyped servant roles which negatively portrayed Blacks. Hattie famously responded to these attacks, “I would rather play a maid for $700 a week than be one for $7 a week”. Indeed, her most famous role was Mammy in Gone with the Wind, for which she became the first African American to win an Oscar. It took 50 years before another Black woman (Whoopi Goldberg in Ghost) won an Oscar. Hattie was awarded 2 Stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, one for radio, the other for film. In 2006, the US Post Office pictured her on a Black Heritage commemorative postage stamp.

Hattie experienced racism and racial segregation throughout her career. She couldn’t attend the premiere of Gone with the Wind in Atlanta because it was held at a whites-only theater. At the Oscars ceremony, she sat at a segregated table, and at her death in 1952, was denied burial in Hollywood Cemetery due to racist restrictions. Throughout her career, she welcomed Black entertainers who couldn’t find a decent place to stay in LA and had a reputation for financial generosity. Despite the criticism by civil rights groups, her role in blazing a path for other Black actors and actresses cannot be denied.
