All Saints Day is Sunday, November 5

The names of Maplewood UMC members and loved ones who have died since the last All Saints Day will be read during Holy Communion as a way of honoring their lives and celebrating that our communion with them continues in Christ Jesus. If you would like to have the name of a loved one read during Holy Communion, please share the name of the person, your name, and their relationship to you with Pastor Kim via email to pastorkim@maplewoodumc.org or text to 314-651-9999.

Dear Friends,

When our son, Mike and his family lived in DC,  the neighborhoods around their home had over the top Halloween decorations.  There was no avoiding these ghoulish displays when Mike took 1 year-old Nate for rides in the stroller. So Mike took a very matter of fact approach.  He pointed out the skeletons and mummies and the spiders with glowing eyes, telling Nate what they were, without indicating they were scary or creepy or could “get him in the night.” Nate was interested and loved naming the figures in the front yards, but the only time he seemed to be at all afraid was when his stroller came very close to a realistic looking rubber snake that was poised to strike.

I can’t help but wonder if folks go to great lengths to create scary lawn displays at Halloween as well as watch horror movies and visit haunted houses in order to be scared by these “make believe” experiences because there are so many scary things that are happening in our own lives we can’t control.   Let’s face it, all you have to do is read the news to know that real life can be pretty scary at times.

This Sunday we will read a scary story from scripture about a “ghost sighting” by Jesus’ disciples. In this story there were frightening things that turned out to be not so frightening after all. And there were frightening things that turned out to be truly frightening. We will talk about how Jesus helped the disciples and helps us, deal with fear of the things in life that don’t go away when we turn off the movie, take down the haunted house or put the decorations away.

I look forward to worshiping with you this Sunday as we continue with our sermon series, “Ghost Stories”.

God’s grace and peace be with you,

Pastor Kim

As we are gearing up for the “Ghost Stories” sermon series that begins on October 15, Please send us your best Trick or Treat jokes so we can share them with the congregation. Email the joke OR send a video of yourself telling the joke to pastorkim@maplewoodumc.org.  We will share them before worship on the slides and during worship as well.

It's that time of year again, to join our BOO CREW TEAM! This team will greet Trick or Treaters at MUMC and pass out treats. You can sign up for Boo Crew ‘23 on the easels or the website/app.  Donations of candy and non-candy treats can be brought to the church! Please meet at the church by 6pm on Tuesday, October 31st. Congratulations and best wishes to Jonah and MacKenzie (Chrun) Findley who were married on Saturday, October 14. Congratulations also to Jonah's parents, Steve and Pascale Findley, as they officially welcome MacKenzie to their family.

...to everyone who supported Henry’s Pink Lemonade Stand on Sunday, October 8th - especially the Youth and Young Friends who helped organize and run it!  Together our Young Disciples raised $408 for the American Cancer Society!!

Welcome to the world, Lorelai Palmer Frederickson, newborn daughter of Cassandra and Ben Frederickson. Lorelai was born at 6:30 p.m. on October 14, weighing in at 6 pounds, 8 ounces and measuring 19 3/4 inches long.

Ben shares that the name Lorelai is a nod Cassandra’s dear friend Laura, who passed away far too early and “we remain convinced pulled some strings for us upstairs as we tried to realize this dream.” Palmer is the name of the road Ben grew up on in Sedalia, where his dad still lives in the house he built.

Ben asks for prayers for Cassandra’s recovery from a challenging and long labor process that she faced very heroically. Her daughter and husband are very much in awe of her.

Congratulations, Cassandra, Ben, and Lorelai! Our prayers for recovery for Cassandra, rest for the entire family, and gratitude for this new life are with you.
