Spring is just around the corner and the hibernating critters (squirrels and
friends) will be waking. Their favorite thing to do is dig up your flowers & veggies in your gardens. Nothing is more frustrating than competing with the squirrels, trying everything under the sun to discourage them from digging everything up.
There’s several recipes to discourage critters in your gardens without
poisoning them. Use a squirt bottle with 1 bottle of hot pepper sauce or cayenne pepper mix with 1 gallon of water and 1 teaspoon of dishwashing liquid. The soap helps the liquid to adhere to what you’re spraying, and should be sprayed on the entire area. Another trick is to get Irish Spring soap and grate it, then sprinkle the shavings around your plants.
Many animals are repelled by citrus scents; gather up orange, lemon, and
grapefruit peels and scatter them around your plants. Also, animals don’t like shapes that move in the night-so hang strips of rags, aluminum foil or balloons from branches or a clothes line to chase them away.
If all this fails, you can contact Orem City to get a live trap and trap the
animal, contact non-emergency dispatch (801-229-7070). Traps can be kept up to 2 weeks. To get a trap come to the front desk of the Orem Police Dept, 95 E Center Street; they will issue a trap with a refundable deposit.
