When Disaster Strikes, What and How Can I Give?
July 28, 2022
By Jim Morse

Much of the following information is quoted or adapted from a joint document of FEMA and National Volunteer Organizations Active in Disaster titled “When Disaster Strikes…How to Donate or Volunteer Successfully,” pamphlet L217.
Following a disaster, I am always asked the question: What can I donate and how? This article is to help answer these questions and provide guidance for future disasters.
FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTIONS ARE OFTEN THE BEST KIND OF DONATION TO MAKE.
Providing a financial contribution to a voluntary organization involved in disaster activities is often the most sensible and the most efficient way of helping the people in need. There are many voluntary organizations with considerable experience in disaster relief in areas such as needs assessment, cleanup, mass feeding, mass sheltering, first aid, crisis counseling, pastoral care, childcare, pet care, home repair, family casework, meeting “unmet needs” and many other areas. When the public supports these voluntary organizations with financial contributions, it helps ensure a steady flow of important services to the people in need after a disaster.
Within the Conference, contributions can always be made to:

Scouts, Methodist men asked for help to help those in need

Scouts and Methodist Men who gather at WVU Jackson’s Mill in September are asked to take advantage of a service project that will benefit folks in the region who are in need.

Scouts will gather Sept. 9-11 for Circuit Rider 32, a camping weekend at Jackson’s Mill filled with wholesome activities. Methodist men from across the state will gather at Jackson’s Mill at the same time for worship, fellowship, inspiration and informative presentations.

Both groups can help those in need who are served by the Upshur Parish House, which is the United Methodist Mission in Buckhannon.

The Upshur Parish House needs household cleaning kits that can be given to their clients. Scouts and men can:

1) bring any kit “ingredients” (listed below) to Jackson’s Mill Sept. 9-10 and drop them off at the check-in on the porch of the Marion Cabin next to the Assembly Hall and/or

2) help assemble kits any time from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 10, in the Assembly Hall.

Here are the kit ingredients: Dish detergent - 14-oz. to 20-oz. size; All-purpose spray cleaner (without bleach) , 32-oz. size; Dish cloth or cleaning rag; Roll paper towels; Kitchen garbage bags, 13-gal. size.

The generosity of the Scouts and Methodist Men will benefit those in need.

Golf Outing slated Sept. 9 near Grafton

This year’s Arnold Eddy Memorial Golf Outing will be on Friday, Sept. 9, at the Tygart Lake Public Golf Course near Grafton.

“Thanks to the golf course management, the price for golfers this year will not change,” said George Hohmann, a member of the Golf Committee.

The cost for a team of four people is $200, if the team registers by Aug. 20 (Francis Asbury’s birthday).

The golf outing is a key fundraiser for the West Virginia United Methodist Men. Money raised helps pay for the men’s scouting ministries.

Circuit Rider plans during Aug. 13 meeting

The West Virginia United Methodist Church Men’s Executive Committee and Scout Coordinators from around the state will finish plans for the Men’s Annual Gathering, the Arnold Eddy Memorial Golf Outing and Scout Circuit Rider during Aug. 13 meetings at St. Matthew United Methodist Church in downtown Weston.

The Men will meet at Noon. The Scout Coordinators will meet at 9 a.m.

Both the Men’s Annual Gathering and the Scout Circuit Rider will occur Sept. 9-11 at WVU Jackson’s Mill. The Golf Outing, which raises funds for the Circuit Rider, will occur Sept. 9 at the Tygart Lake Public Golf Course near Grafton

.

“All three of these events are coming together nicely,” said George Hohmann, president of the West Virginia United Methodist Men. “Planning began last year. These events depend on donations from small businesses and volunteers who dedicate their time and talents.

"We are thrilled that all of this year’s events will be held in person, and that a portion of this year’s Annual Gathering also will be offered online,” Hohmann said.
