While regular curbside yard waste collection has ended for the season, your yard waste has one more chance to be collected this winter! The last day of winter collection will take place on Friday, January 7th.

Both carts and bags can be used for winter collection. Wreaths and garlands won't be accepted, but real Christmas trees with a sticker will be picked up. Christmas trees will need one Compost It! sticker attached. When you set it at the curb, the sticker is the only decoration your tree can have. All ornaments, lights, and wires need to be removed.

Stickers are available at City Hall or online at the button below.
The 2022 Curb It! calendar from Metro Waste Authority is available online. Recycling days for Windsor Heights are the black lid weeks. City Hall will have magnets of these calendars available for residents to pick up in late January or you can download the calendar by clicking the button below.
It's January and that means more snow is on the way. But when everyone takes a few simples steps, the snow removal process is quicker and safer! With each winter storm, please remember these snow removal reminders.

  • Don't park on the street when it snows and 24 hours after the snowfall ends. Failure to do so many result in a $25 citation. Empty streets help the snowplows clear the street safely and efficiently.
  • Clear your sidewalks within 48 hours after the snowfall ends. This will help your neighbors get around safely.
  • Don't push snow from your property into the street.
Keep Fire Hydrants Clear
When you shovel your driveway and sidewalk, don't forget to clear the area around the fire hydrant (if there is one near your property). Heavy snowfall can cover or block these and make it difficult for firefighters to access them in an emergency.
When temperatures drop, the risk of your pipes freezing jumps. That's because water expands as it freezes and this expansion can break metal or plastic pipes. This could cause thousands of dollars in property damage. But here are some simple steps from the Red Cross to prevent this problem.

How to Prevent Frozen Pipes
  • Keep garage doors closed.
  • Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors.
  • Let cold water drip from a faucet.
  • Keep the thermostat set to the same temperature during the day and night.
  • If you are out of town, keep the heat set to no lower than 55 degrees.
  • Add insulation to basements, attics, and crawl spaces.

How to Thaw Frozen Pipes
  • If you turn on your faucet and only a trickle comes out, it's likely that the pipe is frozen.
  • Keep the faucet open so water can come out as the pip begins to thaw.
  • Apply heat to the frozen section of the pipe using an electric heating pad, hairdryer, portable space heater, or wrap pipes with towels soaked in hot water.
  • Do not use a blowtorch, kerosene or propane heater, charcoal stove, or other open flame devices.
  • Apply heat until the water pressure is back to normal.
  • Check all other faucets for other frozen pipes.
City of Windsor Heights buildings will be closed on Monday, January 17th, 2022 in observation of Martin Luther King Jr Day. This holiday will not affect trash/recycling pickup, which will occur as normal on Friday the 21st.
