Welcome to those who are subscribers as well as those who are reading my newsletter for the first time. In addition to the Sun Jupiter conjunction on April 11th at tropical 21 Aries 45. sidereal 27 Pisces 40, which means if you have anything around that degree you will have a couple days when you might have opportunities that have languished that you can now grab on to, and other planetary entrances into signs (scroll down for Celestial Events) the big news really takes place between April 19 -21, when first there is a Solar Eclipse on April 20th (GMT) but on the 19th North America time, and then Jupiter enters sidereal Aries on the 21st followed by Mercury retrograde as well on April 21 though its shadow period or retrograde arc begins on April 7th. (Scroll down for information about Mercury's retrograde arc and retrograde station. Information about the solar eclipse, Jupiter entering sidereal Aries, and actual Mercury retrograde will appear closer to April 19th in Part 2 of this months News and Views.)

That means that this month the period of time without retrogrades, which began on January 22 when Uranus stationed direct comes to an end on April 21, when Mercury stations retrograde. This begins a period that planets retrograde one after the other, including those that always retrograde one time per year (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto) but with the addition of Venus, which retrogrades from July 23 through September 4. For now Mercury retrograding the day after the Solar Eclipse makes the last 10 days of the month very intense.

This month's lunations occur with the Full Moon on April 6, 2023, 4:34 AM GMT, Tropical 16° Libra 07’. Sidereal. 22° Virgo 02’. hasta, and the New Moon Solar Eclipse on April 20, 2023, 04:12 AM GMT, Tropical 29° Aries 50’. Sidereal. 05° Aries 45', aśvinī. If you have any planets, points, or angles around those degrees (I would take a one degree orb) then whatever is represented by that planet, point or angle, will be prominent and important until the next lunation, meaning that if something is conjunct this month's Full Moon, it will be prominent until the next Full Moon (a Lunar Eclipse) on May 5, 2023, and if something is conjunct this month's New Moon, it will be prominent until the next New Moon on May 19, 2023. The New Moon represents beginnings and can help you to institute a change you have been thinking about while the Full Moon is an accomplishment or culmination and gives the push to continue on that path. If your birthday is between April 5-7, then the Full Moon is in your solar return (varṣaphala) or close enough that it will be important for the year ahead until your next birthday, meaning that it may be year when things you have been working on will manifest, or feel like they are moving in the right direction, so continue with whatever is fulfilling you. If your birthday is between April 19-21, then the New Moon Solar Eclipse is in your solar return (varṣaphala) or close enough that it will be important for the year ahead until your next birthday, meaning a change is bound to happen, so work on that change. It could be a physical move, job change, relationship change, or simply working on yourself to integrate new patterns and habits into your life. Expect a great deal of transformative experiences that will make you want to change or take a step in a different direction. Take your time but do head in that direction, since otherwise it will happen to you whether you initiate it or not. (Scroll below for more Celestial Events.)

Mercury Enters Retrograde Arc (Shadow) and Changes Signs

May 31, 2023. Mercury/Budha Leaves Retrograde Arc (Shadow). Tropical 15° Taurus 21' Sidereal 21°Aries 32’. bharaṇī

What I write here is often repeated when I speak about Mercury or any planet entering the retrograde arc (shadow), which occurs when it crosses the degree where it will eventually station direct, and when Mercury stations retrograde that will be the degree when Mercury leaves the retrograde arc (shadow). Mercury enters its shadow, or retrograde arc (the term I prefer), which is the degree of the eventual direct station, on April 7, 2023 and leaves its shadow or retrograde arc when it passes the degree of the retrograde station on May 31, 2023. Like all planets when they retrograde they stay in one section of the zodiac longer than normal. Mercury usually goes through a sign in less than a month when it goes direct but with this retrograde Mercury will stay in the same sign as follows.

According to the tropical zodiac, Mercury stays in Taurus from April 3-June 11, 2023. According to the sidereal zodiac (Jyotisa) Mercury stays in Aries from March 31-June 7, 2023. It is during this period that Mercury enters and leaves the retrograde arc and stations retrograde and direct, which you can see above in bold. The influence on the area of your chart where tropical Taurus and sidereal Aries are located is very focused and requires us to pay attention since Mercury retrograde represents delays, technical difficulties, miscommunication and other annoying things that concern the area of the chart where tropical Taurus and sidereal Aries are located. Scroll below for more information about what the individual houses mean if you are unsure of that.

You are especially affected by Mercury (which you may think is inconsequential but really is not) when you see that it is in one sign for a little over two months and you understand what that area of your chart represents. But you are especially affected during this retrograde arc between April 7 and May 31 if you have any planets, points, or angles, between tropical 05° Taurus 50' - 15° Taurus 21' or between sidereal 11°Aries 45’ - 21°Aries 32’. Remember that Mercury will cross those degrees three times, but if you have something within one degree of the station (the degree it goes retrograde or direct) Mercury will conjoin it twice, but when it conjoins the station it will be there for a few days and feel especially intense.

Remember that even though this retrograde arc is from April 7 through May 31, it is still not quite Mercury retrograde which occurs between April 21 and May 15. However you may begin now during this retrograde arc to get warnings about what is to come. So remember that during these times even little annoyances can interfere with our usual schedules, plans, and even emotions, so it is most important that at the moment, since Mercury enters the retrograde arc on April 7th, you prepare yourself by doing any mental or physical exercise that helps you stay calm and focused. Do not get rattled by little things since you can easily turn something minor into something major. If you suspect your devices are acting funny, or slowing up, do not wait until they break down, but give them a check up. If a project gets delayed, then just call up your patience since getting flustered and impatient are not going to change the situation, but your attitude well. And if communication with someone close to you turns into disagreement, just pull away and change the subject. Nothing gets resolved during Mercury retrograde, and if you have any planets, points or angles in between the retrograde arc, you are affected between April 7 and May 31.

Once Mercury retrograde does begin, what I wrote above will become more intense in the world and also in your personal life, and in Part 2 of April 2023 News and Views, which will come out before Mercury actually retrogrades I will add even more. For now remember that if you keep on top of things, and tackle them before they occur, Mercury retrograde will not be that awful. While it does start now during the retrograde arc (shadow) remember that the actual retrograde begins on April 21 and goes direct on May 15. This period though is a foreshadowing of what will come. Mercury Retrograde always brings the same general uneasiness, even though much of it is unwarranted. Sure, there will be the mild annoyances and disruptions, which may include communication snafus, scheduling conflicts, misunderstandings, and transportation slowdowns, and if you are prepared and figure these things are possible, they will not throw you off your center when they occur.

Remember to think before you speak, do not overreact to what others say and do, and refrain from juggling your usual array of activities. Mercury multitasks well when it moves forward at a steady pace, and not when it appears to slow up, which is what retrogrades are all about. Retrogrades are a great time to look inward and revise and fix something you have previously worked on since once it goes direct you will be able to move forward with something new that you have incorporated in a project, relationship, move, or just with your own appearance, attitudes, and goals. Be quiet, meditate, and look inside. Be more alert than usual, develop more patience, and generally take things slower. Look inward and you will be able to problem solve. Retrogrades are always a time for reflection and revision. 

Read if you use sidereal Indian astrology. If you have a planet, point, or angle in your chart between 11°Aries 45’ - 21°Aries 32’ where Mercury retrogrades, this is what may be slowed down, reviewed, revised, and ultimately reinvigorated and reinvented during this retrograde arc period of April 7-May 31.

Sun. power, vigor; Moon. maternal, mind; Mars. strength, courage; Mercury. speech, learning; Jupiter.  knowledge, wealth; Venus. love, happiness; Saturn. sorrow, fear; Rahu. intensity, compulsion; Ketu. extremes, spirituality; Lagna. destiny, vitality. If you want to use Uranus, Neptune and Pluto you can look below at tropical Western astrology for their keywords.
Mercury stays in Aries from March 31-June 7, 2023. The house that Aries occupies is the area that may be slowed down, reviewed, revised, and ultimately reinvigorated and reinvented. If you do not know which house sidereal Aries occupies, look at your ascendant, or Moon, or even your Sun (if you do not know your ascendant or Moon), and just count from there. General descriptions for bhavas (houses) are as follows:  

1. appearance, destiny, temperament, personality, constitution; 2. Money, family life, food, speech, early childhood; 3. Siblings, Fine arts, courage, desires; 4. Mother, happiness, real estate, vehicles; 5. Children, romance, investments, speculation; 6. Open enemies, work, competition, obstacles, illness; 7. Marriage, partners, contracts, passion; 8. Life and death cycle, research, accidents, other's money, inheritance; 9. Father, teacher (guru), religion, higher learning, opportunity; 10. Career, status, public recognition, reputation; 11. Profits, rewards, gains from work, awards, older siblings; 12. spiritual practice, secret enemies, foreign travel, debt, confinement.

This series of classes is NOT a crash course even though when you complete it you will have rudimentary tools with which to start analyzing the chart. We will cover the basic level of Jyotisa, or Vedic Astrology. This incorporates basic tools for beginning chart interpretation and forecasting including history, some Sanskrit meanings and pronunciation of concepts, and supplemental reading material and videos, and discussion group in between classes. Everyone will receive recordings and power point presentation the next day, whether you attend live or not. If you sign up for the entire series you will thoroughly learn Jyotisa and even some Sanskrit. After taking Level One and Level Two you will be prepared to take the test for Certification Level I of ACVA (American College of Vedic Astrology), if you choose. There will be opportunities to read supplemental material, do assignments, and review what we learned, but that is up to you. A book list will be provided once you register. The class will be virtual, and you will receive an audio-visual presentation, audio MP3, and extensive handouts. 
 
This class is appropriate for those who are starting at the beginning, or for those who have studied with me, or have learned in the past, and want to refresh your knowledge. We will start with the basics of the chart, so that you have all the tools you need to begin to tackle chart interpretation. But do not expect to finish the course and be able to read an entire chart. You will be able to learn techniques that will help identify themes in the chart. We hope to cover everything as laid out below and then some.
