Pivotal, Sincere Message from the Heart
SOS #110    J. Morris Hicks    (6-15-21)

Last week, an article in the Climate and Environment section of The NY Times caught my attention.

Entitled, Our Response to Climate Change Is Missing Something Big, Scientists Say, it addressed the failure of the world's scientific community to address the "big picture" regarding their approach to dealing with climate change.

The piece certainly resonated with my concerns about the world's "leadership community" to address that same big picture -- and much more.

To be sure, I do not believe that the world's scientific or leadership communities will ever satisfactorily address all of our sustainability issues, including climate change -- unless there is a some kind of never-ending outcry from the public demanding such action.

If that public outcry is to ever happen, I believe that it will begin with a "conversation" that is steadily increasing in volume month by month. And that is why we published
our book, Outcry, on the fiftieth anniversary of Earth Day last year.

But the rare, yet simple, message in that book cannot help spark that all-important conversation if it is not read. After being available online for 14 months -- so far, it has barely left the starting gate. First, a description of the book's cover:

The following unsolicited message of urgency from James Cameron -- appears in red on the cover. These words first appeared in an email to me from him in April of 2019, and he later approved of their use on the cover of this book.

"The world is completely delusional and going to hell in a handbasket as fast as humanly possible. The only relevant question is: How do we make the crash as soft a landing as possible for some kind of continuation of human civilization?"

Sadly, our world has only worsened since Cameron drafted the above message over two years ago. And few people are talking about it. Now, well over a year after our book went on sale, it saddens me to say that very few people have read it.

Some of you may be thinking that this SOS Memo is a shameless attempt on my part to sell books. It's not.

Rather, it is a sincerely motivated effort to help jumpstart an urgently-needed, global "conversation" about how we can work together to maximize our chances of saving our civilization and our species.

The complete "Introduction to Outcry" is provided below -- as it finally dawned on me last week that it should have been included in one of my SOS Memos long before now. So here it is -- a quick read that will help you explain our ever-worsening situation, and reasons for hope, to your friends, family and co-workers.

Just maybe, it will help inspire you, and them, to read the entire book -- a "big picture" analysis that was written so that it could be easily understood by the average 11th grader.

Introduction to Outcry

"Humankind has not woven the web of life. We are but one thread within it. Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves. All things are bound together. All things connect."

-Chief Seattle, 1854

When we started writing this book in late 2019, few people had ever heard of the Coronavirus. On the cover, we alluded to a possible silver lining associated with Covid-19. If there is a silver lining, and we believe that there will be, we may not feel its beneficial effects for quite a few years.

Much later, historians may record that the Earth-shattering wake-up call we received in early 2020 -- ultimately jolted us into urgently working to reinvent our grossly unsustainable relationship with the biosphere that gives us life. We will review the Covid-19 situation further in several chapters.

As the title suggests, this book is all about what Mother Nature is trying to tell us regarding how our civilization is rapidly destroying that biosphere. Her OUTCRY is abundantly evident in phenomena like declining insect, bird and fish populations, a severe biodiversity loss, rising global temperatures, storms, fires, melting ice at the poles, and dead zones in the oceans; to name just a few.

The title also suggests an OUTCRY from nine "big picture" scientists who have connected the dots between human behavior and the deterioration of nature's ability to keep us alive. On the front cover, the highly acclaimed filmmaker and environmentalist, James Cameron, sums up our dilemma in stark terms and asks the question that we strive to answer in this book:

"The world is completely delusional and going to hell in a handbasket as fast as humanly possible. The only relevant question is: How do we make the crash as soft a landing as possible for some kind of continuation of human civilization?"

Following the "OUTCRY" from nature and the nine scientists in Part One, most of the book is aimed at what we can do about re-inventing our living arrangements enough to slow, stop or reverse the damage we have already done. In other words, what can be done -- soon enough -- to prevent the extinction of Homo sapiens? Some scientists have suggested that we must give half of the planet back to nature in order to survive. The problem is that there is no global conversation regarding a plan for how we might do that.

Throughout the book, we describe an envisioned, highly-efficient, futuristic, luxurious and ultra-sustainable, coast-to-coast living corridor that could be developed in the USA and thus serve as a model for the rest of the world. We're talking about a spectacular new way of life, where all residents will enjoy free access to food, housing, clothing, transportation and the best healthcare. This new transcontinental corridor would also feature a totally new economy that rewards less consumption of physical stuff. How we might be able to turn that vision into reality before 2030 is the focus of this book.

The primary question as we develop that model is: "How green is green enough?" Since we can't be sure of the answer, we must totally re-design every aspect of our civilization, and even then, it may not be enough to save us. Some scientists have concluded that we have waited too long to make much of a difference. Perhaps those scientists haven't been thinking outside the box enough when it comes to what we humans can accomplish when we throw the old, ineffective, playbook out the window.

Accepting defeat is not an option -- as we simply cannot let our children down. We must also think about the billions of children who will follow them. As Dr. E.O. Wilson says, "We have enough intelligence, goodwill, generosity, and enterprise to turn Earth into a paradise both for ourselves and for the biosphere that gave us birth."

So, let's get busy and just do it. Hopefully, this book will provide readers with some of the knowledge and inspiration needed to help spark that crucial conversation regarding a complete reinvention of our civilization.  And if we do this right, we are confident that Mother Nature will be delighted to see us survive and thrive indefinitely on this very special planet.

"The one process now going on, that will take millions of years
to correct, is the loss of genetic and species diversity by the destruction of natural habitats. This is the folly our descendants are least likely to forgive us."

-E.O. Wilson

The above E.O. Wilson quote marks the end of the book's Introduction -- but I encourage you to read a few more paragraphs below his image below that relate directly to the future of humanity on this planet.

Please continue on to "The Bottom Line" regarding the actions we must take to provide us with the best overall chance to save our civilization.

In our book, the works of this incomparable ecological scientist are referenced and quoted often

To our knowledge, Outcry remains the only book ever published that features an envisioned, totally-green, ultra-sustainable, super-desirable, future way of living for humans -- along with ideas for how we might get there as quickly as possible.

As you may know, it is only available as an e-book for environmental reasons. That said, many people have told me that they would like to read it, but that they don't have a physical Kindle device.

The good news is that you don't need a physical Kindle device. This e-book book can be quickly downloaded from Amazon to a free Kindle app on any, or all, of your devices: Macs, PCs, desktop, laptop, tablet and cell phone.

For environmental reasons, I stopped buying manufactured books long ago. I also love having all of my favorite books in my pocket everywhere I go.

The Bottom Line. As for my original fear that some people reading this SOS Memo will think that it's just a shameless attempt on my part to sell books, I will just say that I cannot control what people think.

But the truth is, I am just trying to do all that I can to help ensure a pleasant future for my eight grandchildren and, indeed, all of the innocent children of the world.

To that end, I am confident that if a few million people carefully read and digested Outcry, that there would definitely be a more robust "conversation" taking place about the most important topic in the history of humanity: our survival as a species.

Please understand that this is not a doom and gloom message. Rather, I consider it to be one of opportunity and hope.

We know that our generation has created a dauntingly huge ecological sustainability problem, although we didn't start becoming fully aware of our selfish folly until the first few decades of this century.

Now, with more than 20% of this century behind us, I am fairly certain that without a robust "conversation" on this topic throughout the world, that there will be not be sufficient action preserve the ecosystem of the only planet in the universe capable of keeping us alive.

Finally, it's crucially important that we adults give it our best shot because, even if we fail, our children will at least know that we tried our very best.

Sadly, we're running out of time. Consider this terrifying conclusion from the straight-talking governor of the state of Washington.

"We are the first generation to feel the sting of climate change, and we are the last generation
that can do something about it.

-Jay Inslee

Besides educating yourself and joining the long-overdue "conversation" about how we can maximize the chances that all of the children can enjoy pleasant, lengthy and meaningful lives -- what else can you do?

Here's how you can help make that crucial "conversation" much more likely to happen. I'll try to make it easy for you: Just consider sending a note like the one below to your friends, co-workers and family members.

You might even refer to this exercise as a "profound chain letter idea" for promoting a better world for all Earthlings, human and wild. The "draft" note below contains a link to the online version of this memo.

Dear Friend,

I just read an enlightening piece that the author calls an SOS (Save Our Species) Memo. It's about a five-minute read and the writer is convinced that if enough people read and heed it -- that it could play a key role in helping to spark an important global "conversation" about what we all can do to promote health, hope and harmony on planet Earth.

At the link below, visit the SOS Memo page and click on #110 which will be at or near the top of the list. It is entitled Pivotal, Sincere Message from the Heart.

Check it out and let me know if you would like to discuss this very important topic.

Free Zoom Conferences. In the interest of jump-starting the urgently-needed global "conversation" about the dilemma we are in, I am now offering to conduct private Zoom conferences free of charge to groups of almost any size. I look forward to ZOOM-ing with you and your group sometime soon.

Send me an email and let's get started.

In preparation for those Zoom visits, I have developed a one-hour format consisting of an opening statement followed by a 20-minute slide show and then ending with a discussion and Q&A with the attendees. The sessions you organize will be far more interesting and productive if attendees have read OUTCRY in advance.

Our book, for a host of environmental reasons, is only available as an e-book on Amazon. As such, it contains hyperlinks to hundreds of references and videos, is less expensive, does not kill any trees and does not have to be manufactured and delivered.

You can join my mailing list and/or find all of my previous postings by visiting the SOS Memos page on my website

Here are a few of them where you can see how my vision has evolved since that first "creative idea" on 9-21-18:

As always, I am just trying to spark a global conversation about what is needed. By sharing a vision of what I believe is possible, I hope to influence others to think bigger, better and bolder.

What else can you do to help? Two things:

1. Live as greenly as possible while doing all that you can to raise the awareness of "big picture" solutions that are crucially necessary for saving our civilization.

2. Share this BSB and my "Mama Ain't Happy" BSB with prominent journalists, thought leaders and/or elected officials whom you respect. They need to learn a lot more about the many reasons why Mama ain't happy.
