Volunteer Spotlight

Previously a Pantry Bag Program client, Patrick decided to donate his time to BHH after geting back on his feet.

Born in Scotland, Patrick was a Navy brat who moved around frequently during his childhood. He went on to serve in the U.S. Navy as a Cryptological Technician (Maintenance), where he was tasked with troubleshooting sophisticated physical security systems, electronic equipment, antennas, and more.

He lived in the Washington D.C. area before moving to Florida in 1988 to help his father with his business. He also worked at AT&T for 16 years before retiring early due to a disability.

When he needed assistance a few years ago, Patrick became a client in our Pantry Bag Program. Once he regained stability, he was inspired to give back and started volunteering in July of 2020 at our West Boca pantry bag distribution site. He continues to help with traffic control and attends to walk-up clients.

Patrick says he doesn't volunteer "out of obligation, but because it's the right thing to do." He loves that he can help others and make them happy and enjoys the camaraderie with his fellow volunteers.

The second picture showcases some of our students receiving certificates of completion for successfully completing our one-week Job Readiness course.

In the third picture, BHH Job Training Student Kelinda D. (third from left) and her classmates are being recognized for completing their Certified Nursing Assistant program.

Mentor Spotlight

A retired executive from two international corporations, Gary has dedicated his efforts and passion to volunteerism through various local nonprofits.

Gary has volunteered at Boca Helping Hands as a Job Mentor for the past 10 years and is also a BHH Board Member.

"I find it is rewarding to lift [clients’] spirits and hope with a positive attitude and by making them feel good about themselves,” he said. “Boca Helping Hands has a great team, and I am fortunate to be a small part."

We’ve been blessed to be a beneficiary of Gary’s time and talents, which he also shares with other nonprofits. He’s the past president of the Rotary Club of Boca Raton, where he’s currently a Committee Chair and on the Board of Directors. Gary also serves on various advisory boards and financial committees for The Broward Center for the Performing Arts, Fuller Center, Place of Hope, Roots and Wings, and Changing Lives.
