OA WSO March Bulletin 2018
Q&A

We were all newcomers at one time!

Q: What do you remember about being a newcomer?

~ I remember how nervous I was when led to that front row for my first meeting and how I left that meeting with a feeling of hope.  Someone understood how I felt and I needed a sponsor - I was so tired of being alone with this disease that I called the numbers I had written down and got a sponsor the next day.  My God was leading me and cut through my fear, shame and ego one step at a time.

~ That feeling of finally having found people who truly understood my problem, who were warm and welcoming, and who really wanted to help me. At my first meeting they asked me if I could, for that one day, eat lunch and dinner and not eat between meals. I was also asked if I could get to another meeting during the week. I did both and was amazed. I was "hungry" for more of the solution, more of the program. I just kept trying all the suggestions, which worked!

I finally found a place to talk about the crazy things I thought and did around food and that there might be a solution for me.

Q: When did you know OA was for you?

~ Wow!  I want to say from my first meeting and then having someone who cared enough to sponsor me leading me through the first three Steps.  Plus as a newcomer when I gently stood up for OA when another person said she thought it might be a cult.

~ I knew OA was for me at the first meeting when I heard people taking about how food called them, how they obsessed about buffets, and how they found a solution in OA. What I knew right away was I wanted what they had!

When I changed my abstinence date and got serious about step work.

Q: How do you keep your program fresh?

~ By continuing to attend meetings, contact my sponsor weekly (more often if needed) and be available for my treasured sponsees.  It's important for me to listen at my meetings to long-timers and newcomers alike.  I never know when my God will speak through one of his emissaries with skin on them.  This God-given program of OA has turned my existence into this precious adventure called my life.

~ Keeping it fresh is a daily event, whether it be meetings, phone calls, reading, step work, podcasts..... It's really about attitude and willingness. Showing up and staying involved is really what keeps it fresh for me.

Working with newcomers, doing service, sponsoring.
