HONOR A LOVED ONE
DURING THE HOLIDAYS

Our sanctuary is so lovely during Advent and Christmas when it is decorated with candles, fresh flowers, and greenery. This holiday “dress” transformation will occur as members of our music ministry share special musical offerings during the annual Hanging of the Greens service at 6pm on Sunday, December 4. You are invited to honor a loved one by making a donation toward the decorations for the service. With $15 for each honorific or memorial gift, all monies will help defray the cost of the trees, wreaths, fresh flowers, and greenery for the service. An insert in the December 11 worship order will list the names of all for whom gifts were given. Please submit your request here. Checks or electronic payments should be received no later than Friday, December 2. Forms are also available in Sunday School boxes. Mail checks to: Financial Administrator, 99 N. Salisbury St., Raleigh, NC 27603; please write “Holiday Greenery” on the memo line.

END OF DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME!

Daylight Saving Time ends this Saturday, November 5. Be sure to set your clocks back one hour before going to bed!
CITY OF OAKS MARATHON

The City of Oaks Marathon should cause little or no difficulty for travel to FBC on Sunday morning, November 6. The good news is all downtown streets will reopen by 8:30am. The main obstacle will be the closure of Glenwood Ave from Tucker Street to Morgan Street until 3pm.  You should be able to travel south on Glenwood Ave, turn left on Peace Street and then right on Halifax/Salisbury and flow into Salisbury Street to the church.  From the south there may be a few instances of minor rerouting. There will be some street closures in west Raleigh (around Hillsborough Street and the Village District) and the Crabtree Valley area (affecting short sections of Blue Ridge Road, Crabtree Valley Avenue, and North Hills Drive). These closures may hinder travel in those areas prior to 9:30am and some even after worship. For a course map and additional information regarding how your neighborhood might be affected, visit the City of Oaks Marathon website.

ALL SAINTS DAY
NOVEMBER 6

For a number of years now, we have been celebrating All Saints Day on November 1 when it falls on a Sunday, and the first Sunday after November 1 when it does not. Though still relatively new to many Baptists, it is an ancient Christian tradition that dates back at least to the fifth century. In the Eastern Church, it began in the season of Easter and eventually moved to the season after Pentecost. In the Western Church, it moved to November 1 in 835 C.E.

The celebration began as a way of recognizing certain people, but today it points to the saintly status of all Christians – not to our perfection but to our experience of being shaped by God’s grace as revealed in Christ. All Saints Day also provides space to celebrate our great hope for eternal life. Thus, we include a prayerful remembrance of the church members we have lost over the past year and locate our very real grief in the context of eternal hope.

REMEMBRANCE OF JIMMY THOMPSON

This year we will also include an added remembrance of our beloved custodian Jimmy Thompson who died suddenly on July 11. A funeral service celebrating his life was held in Goldsboro this summer, but many church members were not able to attend. So, we felt a need to create space not only to remember Jimmy but to extend love and support to his family. We will accomplish both purposes in the service and at a light reception immediately following it.

HOT CHOCOLATE GIVEAWAY

We are thrilled to bring back our annual hot chocolate giveaway for the Raleigh Christmas parade! This is always a great chance to offer our local community hospitality with a simple act of kindness, and this is a great service opportunity for all ages. Join us on Saturday, November 19, from 8:30-11:30am at our Hillsborough Street entrance, as we give away free cups of hot chocolate to our community. All volunteers will be given a parking pass for their windshield for easy access to our back parking lot. Also, there's no better seat for the parade! If you are able to volunteer, please email Crystal Bacon.

HONORING OUR VETERANS:
NOVEMBER 13

Each year around Veterans Day, we honor those in our congregation who have served our county in the military as well as those who are currently serving. If you are a veteran and your name has not appeared on a list from previous years, or you have relatives who are currently serving in the military, please email Jennie Herrick in the church office to update the list. We want to be as accurate as possible and appreciate your assistance.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

Each year, CBF publishes a prayer guide introducing individuals to field personnel, chaplains, pastoral counselors and churches doing incredible work around the world. The 2022 guide includes a weekly prayer focus as well as birthdays of field personnel, chaplains, pastoral counselors and CBF staff so you can pray for them during the week. We hope you will join with CBF churches all across the world in praying for the ways God is at work through this network. Copies will be available in the church office, or an online copy may be found here.
TOY JOY VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Toy Joy is happening very soon
November 12 and we are in need of more folks (middle school-age and up) who would be willing to help this year. This is the first time since 2019 that we will be inviting our guests to come in the building and shop for their children and it takes more folks to make this happen than our past two years of drive-by pickups. We have over 250 families registered and appreciate your assistance to make the day go smoothly for them as they shop.

Please click on this Sign-up Genius link and volunteer for either the morning (8:30am 12pm) or the afternoon (1:30 - 5pm) or both. We can promise this will jump start the holiday season for you! Masks will be required for both volunteers and guests.

Contact Anne Cooke by email or phone (mobile: 919-986-9465 or home: 919-782-7491) if you have questions or need help with using SignUp Genius.

COATS NEEDED

As the fall brings colder temperatures, the clothing ministry has an urgent need for all sizes of men's and women's coats. You may bring your donations to the bin located at the back parking lot door, any time the church office is open. We appreciate your continued support through donations that allow us to provide warmth for our neighbors in need!

NORTH CAROLINA STATE MISSIONS OFFERING

Our NC Mission Offering helps fund non-profit organizations doing work and providing services primarily in North Carolina. Through the generosity of FBC members, we have already received $2,012 toward our goal of $10,000. The following organizations will receive our offering:

Baptists on Mission Disaster Relief is currently serving Hurricane Ian survivors in some of the worst hit parts of Florida. Manna One feeding unit (30,000 meals per day capacity) is set up and providing meals in Cape Coral, Florida. Feeding, recovery, shower/laundry, logistics, safety, Medical Reserve Corp, communications, admin and chaplaincy are all currently working.

Baptist Children’s Homes of North Carolina (BCH) was born in 1885 with the Thomasville Orphanage and later the Kennedy Home in Kinston in 1914. Today, BCH as a nonprofit in 21 statewide locations has added a variety of services to offer help and hope to children, families, single mothers, college students, intellectually/developmentally disabled adults, and aging adults.

Baptist Retirement Homes is a faith-based, not-for-profit organization with a 70-year legacy of excellence to provide older adults with a second-to-none senior living experience rooted in our core values — honesty, fairness, compassion, cooperation, dependability, humor, kindness, loyalty, patience, and conscientiousness.

Baptist Hospital (Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist) touches the lives of so many from the smallest child to aging adults. As a nonprofit healthcare organization, it provides the highest quality compassionate care, conducts lifesaving research, and offers leading-edge medical education as well as patient assistance with medical bills.

Thank you for your gifts and prayers for this offering.

AN UPDATE FROM ROMANIA

Hi All,

Today has been another interesting day. We got up before 6am and left at 7am for the mountains, Transylvania specifically. However, on the way we stopped at Pele Castle where the last king of Romania lived (Karol I). He died around the time of WW I. This was their summer home and it was SO very nice lots of ornately carved wood and even electricity and a central vacuum system. I have some good pictures of it.

After that, we went on to the Bran Castle (otherwise knows as Dracula’s castle). Unfortunately, it was not impressive after seeing Pele first. But then it is a LOT older than Pele.

We shopped a little in the little local market set up outside the castle, then we headed off to eat at a really good restaurant.

We walked right at 3 miles and climbed the equivalent of 25 stories according to someone’s watch. If I don’t see a step again for a while, I’ll be happy. Of course, our apartment is located on the third floor of the building we’re in, so we did have to climb more when we got back around 8:45. After we ate, the van got very quiet as we were full and tired.

Tomorrow we go back to the warehouse to do more packing, hopefully even more efficiently than on Saturday. Our goal for our time here is 1200 boxes, not the 360 we were originally told. There are 50 boxes to a pallet and we’ve done 6 pallets, so we have 20 pallets left to do which means we’ll pack only 250 a day for the rest of the time here. I think they are really surprised at how much we were able to do. We may even exceed the 1200. As you can tell, we are really into it!

We will work Monday and Tuesday, go to the border on Wednesday, work on Thursday and Friday and leave here at 3am on Saturday. I’m coming home for a vacation! :)

I hope all is well with each of you. It’s interesting that you don’t seem that far away since I can write you. You would enjoy being here.

I did notice that even in the countryside, Romania seems to be doing well economically. There were crowds at both castles (big crowds), lots of people eating out, etc. I guess I’m a little surprised at the noticeable difference with Ukraine as I knew it, with the potholes in the streets, etc. The roads here are good we traveled a good bit on an Autobahn-type road toady. The roads are crowded with cars. They drive like the rest of Europe wild and crazy and miss each other by inches.
