TOP TEN REASONS TO ORDER THE MEAL PLAN

Q&A WITH LOCAL MEMBERS

How do you keep your OA program upfront on vacations?

This is a very apt question for me as I have travel plans for the majority of the summer.  The foundation of my program begins with abstinence. While I'm traveling, just as my days will consist of an itinerary of events,  my next-day meals will be planned  the night before. Planning will consist of writing down what I will be eating, estimating times of meals and packing my food.  On vacation days when I'm not able to pack my meals, I will bring my travel food scale and not be shy about weighing my food while in a restaurant.

In addition, I will continue to support my emotional and spiritual growth in program  by listening to pod casts and telephone meetings, attending face to face meetings, reading OA literature,  and staying in touch with program friends, and my sponsor.  I plan to use any of these supports at various times during my trip.

Vacation is a time to rejuvenate the body and soul, similar to the feeling I get when I practice abstinence and the 12 steps - even while on vacation. It has been a gift to feel this way.  Thank you, HP!

- Jennifer

How do you keep your abstinence
at summer picnics and other
social gatherings?

Funny you should ask! First, I pray that God will guide me and help me to let go of my old defense mechanisms of the grumps when I don't know most of the people there and they are serving late. Staying sober with the food is so important for this compulsive overeater. I bring some of my own food or sometimes I inquire what the menu is to be. If that is too touchy and the meals will be later than I'd like them to be, I will eat before and bring my favorite beverage with me to the function (iced decaf latte with sugar-free vanilla and non-fat milk).  There also have been times where I just do the best I can with what is there as long as the food is within safe parameters for me.

My Program goes with me -- prayer, reading, writing and meditation. Attending a meeting while I'm away is often possible and such a lift to my vacation and feeling close to my God.

NATURE WALK THANK YOU!
On June 10, 2018 an OA Nature Walk was was held at Save the Bay Providence Center. Thank you to all whose support created a successful event.
7TH TRADITION

Every OA Group ought to be fully self supporting,
declining outside contributions.
"Our contributions make sure there is a place for compulsive eaters to meet and share their recovery," says one local OA member.

If every person donated a  one-time  gift of $30 in honor of their recovery in OA, in addition to what they give at a meeting, World Service would be fully  self-supporting Individual members can send checks and money orders to any OA service body. Credit card contributions and Automatic Recurring Contributions (ARC) can be made at  oa.org/contribute

Another local OA member says, "Tradition 7 means I need to do my part and support the Program any way I can - financially and physically by being available to take service positions, share, be sponsored, sponsor, listen and accept others as they are - sometimes that means stressing the 7th Tradition when outside interests are brought into our meetings."

"Humbly asked Him  to remove
our  shortcomings."
The seventh in the series of "The Importance of Working All Twelve Steps" workshops discusses what to do with the defects of character discovered in Step Six. Two members tell their stories and talk about how OA-approved literature ( Alcoholics Anonymous ( Big Book)  The Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions of Overeaters Anonymous , and  Sponsoring through the Twelve Steps ) helped them take the Seventh Step. Memorable quotes from The Twelve Step and Twelve Traditions of Overeaters Anonymous were: "... our goal is ... simply to draw closer to being the people God intends us to be" (p.61), "Real humility about our character defects carries with it acceptance" (p.61), and "Our simple prayers, humbly spoken, are answered in wonderful ways as we open our lives to God's transforming power, and we find that God does for us what we could never do for ourselves" (p.65). Questions from the pamphlet  Sponsoring through the Twelve Steps  were provided to help members who might be stuck in Step Seven.
